Thinking about getting a scope for my K98. Anyone got any suggestions?
FYI, it'll be used for distance target shooting if that makes any difference.

My advice is don't. To add a scope you will need to alter the rifle by tapping the receiver and altering the bolt handle. Once you do this it will have zero value.
The only safe option is to get a special mount that replaces the rear sight and mount a long eye relief scope on that.

Yes... I used to own a K98. I had a Leupold long eye relief 2x scout scope that mounted in place of the rear sight. No drilling was necessary.

If you want to use it, then use it. Do what ever you want to the rifle.
Its only valuable if you do not shoot it.
As far as scopes go... depending on the range there are at least 2 dozen scopes you can roll with. Maybe even more.

What kind of ranges are you interested in shooting to?

Probably in the 300-500 yd range at first. Maybe a bit longer once I get proficient at those distances using a scope (never used one before. I've always gone open sights). The effective range for the Mauser is what? half a mile or more?
Also, I'm going to look into that Leupold set up you mentioned.
Thanks for the info guys.

If you want to shoot at 500 + I would advise stay away from LER or pistol scopes... Try this mount if you have $ and get a scope of at least 10X +

I suggest you buy a Remington Model 700 or Winchester Model 70, if you want a good scoped bolt action rifle. Get it in .308 or 30-06. Don't mess with your K.98 by puting a scope on it.

Not my page, but it may help you: http://t6aluminum.tripod.com/98_mauser_scoutrifle.htm
If you are turned on / have wood for the scout concept, that is.

thats probably the best way to go for distance shooting.
But now I'm also interested in this 'scout' concept. James, I'd like to hear more about your set-up. Hardware and so forth and where I might be able to pick that stuff up. You can PM me if you'd like.
Thanks all for the advice.

GOsh, this was a rifle I had about 15 years ago... my dad did all the work on it. I bet you could do a search at Brownells or Cabelas online.
I would be comfortable shooting a K98 to 500m or farther - it can certainly reach that far. A scope I've use more recently was the Leaupold VariX II 3x9. Its not too expensive, but it is a quality scope that can get the job done.
