Russian Texan, you're linking to web pages, not images. If you want them to work, right-click the image on the page and select "properties," then copy the URL and put THAT in the tags.

You're wrong.
This should be considered as weapon of last chance. Imagine a case if your enemy pointing gun at you and you'll be shot if you don't kill him immediately.
But in general i agree - this is only for show not for combat

Do you think an tomohawk will penetrade kevlar, or even rifle magazines worn on the chest. I think it is better to take his change and try to get his enemy to the ground and then juse the axe.

I think that those guys are good enoght to hit you in the face :) And how about a "quiet takedown"? Regardless whatever applications are, it still looks freaking impressive. As far as kevlar and other stuff - I think that picture was taken either in the late 70s or early 80s

Yes I think it can but it doesn't have too.

don't be too sure...i'm not totally sure on this, but i've once been told that the perfect weapon against kevlar is a bow; it supposedly goes right trough.. (anyone can confirm/prove i'm talking crap?)

hehe, yeh .. try arguing about whether a tomahawk will get through kevlar or not after you've had your head cleaved open by a big, tomahawk throwing Russian.

Great pictures. I read an article that talked about how the russians developed air dropped APCs. I think they killed something like 200 soldiers trying to perfect the system.
But great pictures no the less...

I have never seen any info about casualties during development of it. 200, WOW :o
Would you please post the link
Although I remember hearing something about French trying to develop similar system and putting death row inmates inside of the dropped vehicles, probably BS but who knows...

I'm pretty sure it was in print actually. We have a huge military library here, so you can find really obsure books like that.
First of all the BMD are not dropped with their crews inside. Sometimes they are dropped with the driver on board, but never a full crew. That has never been standard procedure to drop with a full crew on board.
Even if it was dropped with a full crwe on board that crew couldn't just drive away anyway... there are all of the chute lines to disconnect and a frame on the back of the vehicles that carried the packed chutes to be removed first. Then you have to unsecure the main gun which is tied down for the drop. It takes about 10 minutes to get the BMD ready for combat after it lands so having the crew on board would be pointless with regard to getting into action quickly.
Regarding the Tomahawk the Soviets did extensive testing and found that if you shot at someone they tended to shoot back if armed. If you threw a knife or in this case ax at them they generally concentrated on avoiding the missile, during which spetsnaz are trained to close the distance rapidly and attack with another weapon (ie bayonet or spade) or draw a pistol and shoot the target.
regarding tomahawks and kevlar, Kevlar is not knife proof... lots of cops around the world are killed or injured every year because they bet a mate that their vest will stop a knife and find they will not. Knife protection vests are available (and generally consist of steel rings like chainmail which of course will stop a blade, but not a bullet).
