Ask vladrussianarms. He is a knife collector and he is in SOBR. So he should know.

I believe you are referring to what was marketed quite awhile ago (mid-80's) as the "Spetsnaz Ballistic Knife". These were eventually banned. To the best of my knowledge, these knives were never genuine Soviet / Russian issue, the use of "Spetsnaz" terminology was just a clever marketing ploy. They were being sold from a company in Arizona called "Phoenix Systems" without the spring, which had to be purchased elsewhere. However, there was a actual "ballistic" knife used by Russian Special Forces that had the ability to carry a single cartridge that can be fired from the weapon. I don't know any more details but I'm sure some of the Russian posters will be more helpful.

Russian shooting knife NR2. Fires a single round of silent, armor peircing ammunition. Rediculously accurate for what it is.

that'd be a nasty suprise the last thing you'd be expecting when someone pulls out a knife.

Not to mention that the Spetz are some of the last and best trained knife/hand combators you can find anywhere in the world today.

That's actually called the NRS2 (NRS = Nozh Razvedchika Strelayushiy = Scout's (Reconnaissance-man's) Shooting Knife). The NR2 looks pretty much the same, but is just a regular combat knife that also folds out into an insulated wire-cutter. The round is fired from the handle (away from the blade). The current version (it's been used since at least the start of the 2nd Chechen war) is the NRS3:

It's got a forward-firing 4 round derringer built into the handle and the blade looks to be a serious stabbing knife (there's no serrations or other tools). Both the NRS2 and 3 fire the silent piston-driven cartridges (http://world.guns.ru/ammo/sp-e.htm), so there's no need for a suppressor.

From what I understand the purpose of having this is as an emergency back-up when sneaking up to cut down a sentry or somebody else (the knife is the quietest way to kill period - it goes in without a sound and if you know what you are doing you are almost guaranteed a one-stab kill, and of course after that you are there to catch the body before it thumps down on the ground). Otherwise you'd have to carry a knife in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other (since these types of things are done at night, having someone else covering you with a firearm is just asking for friendly-fire), and that's not very convenient for hand-to-hand.

I'd also heard rumors about the "shooting blade" knife before, but nothing substantial. My thanks goes to Frank Discussion for clearing up the mystery! :D
