They use the LAV and the AAV.

Here is the LAV: http://www.olive-drab.com/idphoto/id_photos_lav.php3

Here is the AAV: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/aavp7a1.htm

Both of these are amphibious.

Alot of fine marines are dead, because of old outdated equipment. the piece of **** CH-46(crashed and killed, not only US MARINES, but some brits to). I pray every time I go up in one. and the old ass AAV, it's armor (aluminum) cant even stop heavy machinegun fire, let alone RPG's, that turned two of them into burning death traps! If I was over there I would have my squad, riding on the top of them, like back in the Nam, thats a shame! We deserve better!

Fix the osprey, or move on to something else, and get the AAAV in service!

OH YEA, and F**k collateral damage, when it is costing U.S. lives.

One AAV was hit by a RPG grenade. All the Marines insided died. In a Spanish forum, a Spanish marine told that it was seen in TV.

The problem with AAVs is that they are just too big and that make them good targets for antitank weapons. They are superb at amphibious assault, but they don't should be used as is they were Bradleys.

one the up side though I reckon the AAVs look a whole lot scarier to iraqis because they are bigger but also darker. And iraqis don't know that it's armour is weaker.

having said that the AAAV looks sweet.

And iraqis don't know that it's armour is weaker

The first rule of combat is that you "assume" (although you never assume either...) that your enemy knows everything about you, your tactics and your weapon systems.

What kind of an idiot just sits back and goes
"hey who cares if the armours crap, the enemy don't know that".

That is a recipe for death.

Every countries armed forces get the best for the money they can, not the best that there is full stop..... $$$ matter to the powers that be more than spending big on toys for the boys to play with (as it's seen to be).

Very sad, but very true.

Yeah yeah, old topic I know. Just wanted to post what the Marine Corps is planning to replace the AAV with around 2006/2008. Looks pretty impressive.
Fromhttp://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/aaav.htm There is a good comparisson of the two at this site, and more pics.

Nice to know they're replacing the AAV7 with a vehicle with better armor and firepower. Just wondering though, but why doesn't the USMC just use the LAV for everything instead of just Light Armored Recon?

Anyone know how the armor is on the AAAV? Thanks.

Itīs too thin!!!

But you canīt get a Bradley that is able to swim at the same weight.

Well the LAV only carries 8 Marines, the AAV carries 18. And while the LAV is amphibious its not really designed for riding around in the ocean, the AAAV is more "boat" like and can travel 65 miles at up to 29 mph on the ocean.

The CH-46 needs replacement badly.

I heard they were having problems with the water jets on the AAAV, anyone know if they've fixed it up? I thought the speed was higher than 29mph on water thoguh, even though that is fast ;)

Wasn't there a program to up-armour the LVTP/AAV-7?

Yea, about Marines being killed because of outdated equipment, you guys are right. When I first enlisted in the corps, I made sure not, by any means, to get stuck driving one of those things, and I was always pissy about riding in them :(

yeah its a total shame, the marines unfortunately when it come to recieving money are dead last in the defense budget.they recieve equipment thats usually outdated on its last leg.

The only thing about the 46 that's the same is the airframe... The engines, the avionics are all brand new, not to mention the missile defense capabilities it has (although nothing defends against a lone RPG). To say the 46 is outdated is just plain wrong.

What about the hydraulics? To my knowledge that's what's been causing most of its crashes, though I could be wrong.

I remember the first time I rode in an AmTrac (in 29 Palms (CAX), I got sick on diesel fumes, and all our gear was soaked in antifreeze. When it was time to disembark, I about fell over.
