why is this guy using such a high powered scope on the shortened verion of the F88, wouldnt it be less acurate at the greater distances youd need that scope for?

More than likely he put the scope on there because it looks cool and to give us something to talk about...

Maybe a 9mm variant

Carbine variant, mostly used for APC and Tank crews... some SF (not much nowadays)
Maybe the scope is for designated sharpshooter, i have seen SAS with M4's with huge scopes like that on them.

Just because the scope is physicly large, doesn't mean it has a high zoom power. I myself have a cheapo scope thats about that wide and long and its only 2.5x power.

the bigger the radius, the easyer it is to see through it.
Look at the terrian. That scope would be highly useful for spotting targets and reporting them to snipers. Also, it looks like its variable magnification and it probably has a wide field of view. On the negative, its prob heavy and is bulky and really isnt well matched to the carbine Steyr AUG anyway. Plus, a full size AUG is short anyway and still has barrel length of M16 (bullpups ONLY advantage in my opinion hehehehe) so a shorty AUG kinda seems a waste to me, especially considering the terrain. Also the scope that comes normally with AUG is ****ty as hell.

He looks like hes patrolling/guarding a certain sector. Scope could just be for spotting/observing. :|

The size of the aperture at the end of the scope also improves light gathering.

I tend to agree with this, knowing the sort of operation that they are on, it makes sense.

Yeah those photos are from a Media photo op thingy while the Aussie soldiers patrolled around Baghdad International Airport. They are RAAF ADGies (Airfield Defence Guards). The website for this little photo op is http://www.defence.gov.au/opfalconer/images/gallery/090503a/090503a.htm, with a video included. As for the scope, perhaps because it was media related, they just chucked the biggest scope they could find on their carbines?? But otherwise, I would also think that it's on there for target identification rather than target engagement. And I guess my third choice would be that ADGies have notorious ego problems and simply put, bigger is better ;) .
