They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
Aye, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

RIP, brother.
Seems there is more to this story. From The Guardian:
Royal Marine died in raid by special forces
Richard Norton-Taylor
Thursday November 6, 2003
The Guardian
The Royal Marine to whom Tony Blair paid tribute yesterday was killed in a "big battle" in northern Iraq between British special forces and supporters of Saddam Hussein aided by foreign fighters.
The battle took place near Mosul, in what military sources yesterday described as a "well-known stronghold of Saddam supporters".
Soldiers from the SAS and the Special Boat Squadron - its marine equivalent - operating with American special forces, were involved in fierce fighting as they stormed what the sources said was a well-protected compound.
They are believed to have killed up to 10 Iraqis and captured a number of foreign fighters, including Saudis, the sources added. But during the fighting four British special forces soldiers were wounded and Corporal Ian Plank, a Royal Marine serving with the SBS, was killed. In the Commons yesterday, Mr Blair described him as "a greatly admired and widely respected member of the Royal Marines".
Aged 31, from Poole, Dorset, he was the 52nd British serviceman to have died in Iraq since March.
The Ministry of Defence declined to comment on the battle. It initially said only that Cpl Plank died when a "coalition unit" came under fire.
British and American special forces, operating in small patrols, have been in Iraq since before the war.
They neutralised airfields in the west of the country after being dropped in from Jordan and helped to secure oil fields in the south. The SAS and SBS, working closely with MI6 and informants, have subsequently been hunting for Saddam and his lieutenants.

Good to see that the Grawniad is a far behind the curve as usual.

1st KIA for the Service in rescent wars?
Yep, the last one was probably the blue-on-blue in the South Atlantic where Sgt Hunt was sadly killed. Can't seem to remember seeing anything after that (in the papers at least). Beginning of the Gulf no 2 there were reports of British vehicles and gear captured by the Iraqis. Does someone have any news of was the SBS involved and were there any casualities (sorry if you have talked this over, I was somewhere with no tv or even a radio at the time. Not in Iraq though)

I think that was the patrol that got bumped on insertion, they ditched their kit ,called in an Emergency extraction,ERV'd with the chopper and bugged out...........minus 2 men,who then echoed Chris Ryan's feat and tabbed it out to Syria, without incident AFAIK.!
