View Full Version : Are you in the profession you wanted to be in?

Jack Mehoff
11-05-2003, 02:55 AM
1)Yes, I am what I wanted to be
2)No, I never really knew what I wanted and here I am
3)No, I tried to get what I wanted but I failed
4)I'm still in the process of trying

Everybody here has an idea of what they want to be or what they wanted to be career wise. What I'm asking is if you actually became what you wanted to be. If you wanted to be an engineer, did you actually go to school and become an engineer? If you wanted to be a mechanic, did you go through the training and become one? Did you become what you wanted? What is it that you wanted to be? If you didn't become what you wanted, why?

Well personally I wanted to go into IT and make networks and what not. After realising that the jobs are not there I had to go to plan b, which is why im joining the army and going ROTC. It sure beats working dead end jobs and being nothing in life, which is my worst fear even more then death.

Well, I'm NOT where I want to be... :(
I'm rejoining the military next summer, hopefully. woot
And after a stint in there, I'll apply for the Norwegian Police Acadamy.

We'll see where it goes on from here.

I've never been sure what i wanted to do, even thru school/uni i just did the subjects i enjoyed and was any good at and sidestepped any question of what i wanted to do as a job. I can give you a list of the jobs i don't want to do, but as for a life long ambition, ask someone else. I am, however, trying to write a novel, and if that ever gets into a decent coherent state i'll try and get it published. Other than that i just scan the jobs pages and go; 'nah, nah, nah' and do something else.

I liken it to looking for a needle in a haystack when you don't even know what a needle looks like.

I'm currently still studying, and it's pretty hard and sometimes rather uninteresting. Perhaps I choose wrong, not that it matters anyway with more and more people loosing their jobs any diploma is handy.

I had no clue a job like mine existed when I was a child, but if I had, I think I would have wanted to do it. Although, it is essentially an extension of being a soldier.

What Tane wrote sums up where I am now.

If I was to choose a single profession above all others, I would be a writer of novels, history, and travel books. I have written one novel and am trying to get it published at the moment.

If any of you are literary agents, send me a pm ;) .

Not really, but in another 2 months ill have my Bachelors and i make sufficient pay doing what i do...

I started working at IGA store about 6 years ago, as a cashier and maintence man, but i left after a year and went and worked for 7-11. Worked overnights there for about 4 years, left there after a few hold ups and after they stopped paying me good. Ended up at Tops markets as a Front-End coordinator for about a year, then IGA hired me as a Night Manager.

Pay is decent. Nothing great, but i dont mind doing my job, all i have to do is walk around the store for a few hours and do some paperwork.

I get paid enough to pay rent and car payments and half of my college, so im doing alright, and right now id be foolish to leave because if the store manager were to leave i am slated to be the first in line to take his place.

Granted, ive been working in retail/grocery since i was 16 and it can be monotinous, but i have decent pay, decent task and decent job security.

Someday though i would like to do something else eventually.

My aunt writes sci-fi novels. Maybe you've heard of her, her name's Tricia Sullivan.

I love writing too, James. After I get out of the military (assuming I get in ;) ) I want to be a novel writer. That'd be ill, fo shizzle.

I plan on doing my ROTC while in university and then going reg force for 5 years or so. After that I want to go to law school and become a lawyer but hey that is a long ways away and you never can tell what you want that far in advance. Situations change and one must adapt ;)

I'm moderately happy at what I do for a living (Field Tech for Xerox). But the pay stinks and my company is going down the ****ter. More work and less pay.

I like fixing equipment and being able to travel from one location to another without being stuck at one place all day. Hopefully one day I'll find a nice cozy field service job somewhere in the Harrisburg,PA area and live up there for the rest of my life.

My start as an artist in game design came out of the blue, didn't really expect to see myself here, but so far it's been very good to me - has even included some international travel. I never want to have a real job ever again - I've done my time in blue collar jobs, shoveling dirt, driving forklifts, and production lines.

Lucky bastard. I hate IT guys I run into all day long when I walk in their office or cubicle and see them on forums or playing call of duty. They get all pissed when I tell thm I need them to ping one of my machines and check to see if it's on their server. Little pricks. Get paid more than me and bitch cause they have to stop slacking off for 2 minutes and do their job.

Sounds like a fun job Earl. How did you get your start?

I made weapon mods as a hobby for about 2 years (Rogue Spear, Ghost Recon, and in the end for Operation Flashpoint). The work I was doing happened to be exactly what they needed help with, so my 'portfolio' was already very public and had a lot of good community feedback. They contacted me and asked if I wanted to work for them and I said:

http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/images/avatars/170920109415119cdecabb.jpg

And I do remember clearly when the first email came in - at my old job on an early, brutal, Monday morning. Everybody knew something was up - I couldn't stop smiling all day I was in such a good mood.

Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a soldier, made it happen, was very very happy. BUT, life just aint that simple. In 97 I was discharged after I was involved in a nast car wreck, it pretty much ended my military career. I beat the odds and learned to walk again with no noticable limp, although it still hurts to run. Now I just do as I damn well please.
