wow man thats a good idea to build those. Much more manuverable then tanks plus elevated so if it hit a mine it would disable the leg but not injure the crew. woot
WOW

Those legs would have to be damn strong tho... When it fires it need to have less or equal amount of recoil that any other tankcrew experiences.
But all in all, awesome picture! :D

Hardly original, Japanese Anime has been drawing mechs for bloody years.

I wanted those American bastards to unleash them in GW2....but they didn't make any.

Why God Why?!!!!!

Reminds me of AT AT or AT ST Star Wars.

It'd be pretty slow though...

i am not so sure that something like that is a good idea.

Nothing that big anyway...what enviroment will it be used in?
It'll probly be quite slow...so it won't be very usfull in big, open spaces. Like the desert.
It'll be to big for the forests...
The streets of Bagdad? :|

Wow, look how exposed the armor on that thing would be. You could destroy one with a single RPG. Or mobility kills would be even easier. Just hit the joints of any of those legs and blow the mechanism or the hydrolics.

Kinda reminds me of a "Bolo"...only I believe Bolos were tracked vehicles.

Anyone here ever read Keith Laumer?

I've hoping the U.S. military would build a real-life Bolo for years now...

some videos of the gizmo (no need to worry about speeding tickets in one of these)
http://www.plustech.fi/WalkingVideo.html

these guys are building an"anime" style mech powered by a pair of chevy big blocks:
http://www.mechaps.com/
they reckon it'll be able to do over 150 Mph!

i'm just waiting for the japanese to take their peace keeping role seriously, you'll start seeing 12ft asimo's armed with a gau-7 and a mk19 under each arm:
http://world.honda.com/ASIMO/
or sony's variant
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/QRIO/story/

someone should do a photoshop makeover and make a tactical marpat asimo. hmmm...
wouldn't be anyone on this forum, 'coz we'd never agree what fooking gun to give it.

Personally, I don't see the usefullness of "legged" vehicles.....

for a "possible" improvement in crossing extremely hostile terrain it comes at a cost of greatly reduced effectiveness in typical terrain compared with existing equipment and at a cost that would, at best, be staggering.

As an AT target I would guess they present a much easier target than a "real world" IFV or tank.

What's the deal with that cockpit....I can't seem to figure out which panel controls the MP3 player or the pizza oven....but I certainly like the Laz Z Boy...better than the bench on the back of a UNIMOG.

The advantage of a vehicle with legs is that they can access SO many more places than a wheeled vehicle (mountains anyone?).

The problem is that they'd be very slow and the legs would be very vulnerable. I guess they'd just have to make them like transformers with retractable legs and whatnot.

And what about urban combat? Can't see this thing 'walking' into the streets and alleys of Baghdad or Mogadishu. Militiamen with RPG's would make short-work of something like this.

Use as an Unmanned Ground Vehicle definately has some possibilities. UGVs are a currently pursued concept and having some heavy duty legs that will go atleast as fast as a man would really raise the maneuverability of a platform like that. Could also add some cool capabilities.. ie. raised view point for recon over hills or cover... stable platform for small indirect fire or tow like systems. ... cool technology.

Im just worried about speed? How fast would something like this travel, im willing to bet not as fast as an Abram.

As someone else noted, that thing is a mobility kill waiting to happen..

For military applications "mechs" and such are useless. Think about it for a few seconds, shrug, and please, for the love of the world, let this thread die.

I second that...if it was made it would only be good for certain situations. But as wallpaper its slick :)

If there was sufficient armor, this thing could step on the bad guys, or kick them out of the way. :P

Well, you have to start somewhere.
The Space shuttle wasn't made on the first try.

First, one guy come's up with an idea. Then it may take 20-50+ years to work things out.

Then one true blue morning a Mech is running around on the battlefield, and infantry has another nightmare enemy.

as for speed that has already been taken care of by sci-fi fan boys, ala wheels or tracks in each leg with certains ones being powered. picture the same vehicle but it can also "drive" just like a car with just a couple of its legs needing the propulsion power. eachleg would have a wheel or track so the mech can basically drive forward and "step" over obstacles on the way.

one of the more interesting mech worlds is Heavy Gear in which they developed a practical application for mechs and a realistic size thats being toyed with even now by robotic engineers in japan. or akin to masamune shirows ghost in the shell and apple seed wehre the author has closely studied japans advancements and pushed forward thier progress and science into what he thinks could be future practical.

in the advent of heavy gear mechas unlike the 3d mech shown in the picture you would have more humanoid mechas that could either walk or drive via two tank tracks in each leg. the advantage of having a tank that could "walk" obstacles, fire around corners like a soldier, that could lower its profile to the height of a tank and fit in tons of places a tank could not especially in city would be great. it would never replace certain tanks for cost effective and staying power but it would be a interesting assault vehicle.

the mecha in the 3d picture would be more of a support weapon in which you could drop it anywhere in the world and have it traverse any terrain and with wheeled legs it could get anywhere fast. you could drop one in any mountainous region and have it go everywhere a tank could not unless the tanks used a extensive engineering crew to rig it a path. with a serious siege weapon and a siege mode where it would deploy a position to abosorb recoil you could have a non air wheeled walking weapon that could seige anything from miles and miles away and yet keep up and also go places even forward non mechanized forces cant. something like a walking paladin or crusader? wasnt one of those **** canned?

realisticly a walking small tank could be pulled off with good powercells or a mini reactor of sorts and would be of great value in cities which is where the battlefield is moving? these things wouldnt replace anything we have now but they could work in special and forward applications as a 1st strike force that is utterly terrifying and in places like cities, comepletly practical. if we ever finish up works with anti grav and magnetic devices these ethings could be fast and lighter. its all scifi until computers make one. im sure you could file this with genetic engineering, organic weapons etc but it will all come to pass.

With sufficient armour and armament a four legged walking vehicle would be better suited to Urban combat than a tank...Tanks cant walk sidle out of an alley way and ambush folks, but a four legged walking thingy looks like it can handle it.
