As stated in the article, any politician to publicly support such an action would be commiting political suicide, and those ramifications alone will keep it far from being a reality.

What is simply happening is that places on the draft boards are being filled again.

Now... why would they be bothering to fill places on draft boards which have been vacant since the 1970s and 1980s? Why in order to have the ability to impose a draft if necessary. Farsight is all this is:
"However, officials were not immediately able to explain how the advertisement appeared on the site. Mr Amon said the notices were a response to the natural attrition in the ranks of the draft board, where some 80% of 11,000 places are now vacant. "It is the routine cycle of things," he said."
Yet in light of this:
"Some 60,000 of the 130,000 US soldiers in Iraq are members of the National Guard or the reserves. An opinion poll last month in the Pentagon-funded Stars and Stripes newspaper, showed 49% threatening not to re-enlist."
The troops have to come from somewhere. If Bush is re-elected in 2004 and still needs a significant presence in Iraq then do you really think that the administration would shirk at reinstating the draft just because the citizens of the US would not want it, would not ask for it, would not need it, and certainly would'nt expect it?

Typical liberal lies. An entire news story created on the basis of hiring for the selective service bureaucracy. It never ceases to amaze me the ways in which the left incredulously lies to the population.

I hope you were just joking. Otherwise you would be proposing having something like a ten million man army.

Your comments remind me of some of the lyrics in Black Sabath's song War Pigs.
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight
They leave that all to the poor
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait til the judgement day comes

Make it four years, males AND females, and give people an option of National and International selective service rather than JUST military and I will support it.
Make it volunteer and it gains you the ability to vote in elections. Just to look at it in another light.
Volunteer is the best way to go in anycase. You get people that want to do what they are doing rather than a bunch of idiots who could care less or feel sorry for themselves.
Either way, I have 4 assault rifles in home, so I can cover three who do not. :)

I have no evidence to support this, but I imagine that this war means the military is having less success recruiting. If this lasts for another year or more, could the US face a significant manpower crunch?

the military is all volunteer any how... the purpose of selective service would be to off set what the "volunteer" military couldnt handle

You miss my point...
A) Draftees suck for the most part. Conscription does nothing to help your military but rather hinders it.
B) Draft should include EVERYONE, not just males. All inclusive and equal opportunist.
C) Draftees suck. You want those that place the nation ahead of themselves, not a bunch of poor minorities or whining Berkley types.
D) Did I say draftees suck?

Agreed. If they're drafting, it's not because they need rear echelon personnel, but front line combatants. A draft is to get more bodies fighting the enemy. Taking a teenage girl through boot camp in 6 weeks (I'm thinking Vietnam era draft process here, correct me if I'm wrong) and putting her out in combat would be something nobody would want.

I tend to agree with Front, though nothing is sediment, but yet its starting to smell fishy. Though you all have to realise, if they were to start drafting not all the troops would be destined for Iraq. Im sure the drafted troops would be sent off to Bosnia or some other spot that isn't so hot to free up experienced troops for Iraq and Afghanistan.
Its only my opinion as a humble tradesman though.

Dont need to wait another year, the US military is already stretched thin.

A) We no longer train troops the way we used too.
B) We already have women in the service. Alot of them. If you want men on the front line, cool. That does not mean women can't be drafted.
C) Did I mention, that Conscript Armies BLOW!?
I could have sworn I did.

The draft won't be reinstated until WW3 starts. Anybody to propose such a thing would be commiting complete and utter destruction of their career, not to mention any support for any war would go down to ZERO.

Maybe the US should start recruiting people from Commonwealth countries to alleviate the stress that the forces are currently having. I know that in the UK it is currently under review for Americans joining the forces there.

As the matter of fact, U.S. military do recruit people from Guam, Puerto Rico, etc.

Don't get yer undies all bunched up. Draft talk at the very best is probably just some brain storming for a contingency. We haven't even dipped into the IRR yet. Recruiting isn't really all that low. Retention is a problem but always is during war. When soldiers leave for combat a lot of divorce happens and soldiers leave service over it. Soldiers get back and have been there and done that ... so they get out. People that don't go see that they may get deployed and when re-up time comes up either the wife makes them say no or somepeople just plain chicken out. Recruits are still signing up though. Just not at a rate that would counter the fall out of the existing military. Heck.. send me to some desert and have people try and kill me while I build schools and hospitals for them.. and I might want a new job too!
Look to see some more bonuses and short tours for new recruits as well as re-ups.

American conscripts helped win two world wars. I wonder if the poor (old, now) bastards who landed in Normandy or fought their way across the Pacific think draftees sucked? Or the super old (there are only a few around now) fellows from the 3rd ID that stopped the Germans at the Marne in 1918, or the fellows that beat the **** out of the enemy in the Argonne?
Populations will accept conscription if they believe in their national leadership and think a cause is just.
