Crew chiefs of the 2d Bomb Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., man their B-52H bombers as a "Cartridge Start" is initiated, Oct. 31, 2003. To provide the quickest means of starting the engines, the B-52 is built with the capability to use a powder cartridge system. The cartridges are discharged forcing the turbine engine to begin taking on the air it needs to operate. This procedure is also known as 'cart starts'. The system is used to save time in getting the bomber active for implementing any emergency war order commitments. Once the engines are started, the wing's behemoths begin the fast walk, also known as an elephant walk, to the end of the runway. Once they are cleared to roll they begin a successive, Minimum Interval Take-Off or "MITO". More than 20 B-52's were launched today for the final stage of the base's NORI. Crew chiefs of the 2d Bomb Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., man their B-52H bombers as a "Cartridge Start" is initiated, Oct. 31, 2003. To provide the quickest means of starting the engines, the B-52 is built with the capability to use a powder cartridge system. The cartridges are discharged forcing the turbine engine to begin taking on the air it needs to operate. This procedure is also known as 'cart starts'. The system is used to save time in getting the bomber active for implementing any emergency war order commitments. Once the engines are started, the wing's behemoths begin the fast walk, also known as an elephant walk, to the end of the runway. Once they are cleared to roll they begin a successive, Minimum Interval Take-Off or "MITO". More than 20 B-52's were launched today for the final stage of the base's NORI.
