This one's a quite interesting specimen, which was originally believed to be fired from the infantry-mens' knees (hence the name "knee-mortar"), the WWII Japanese Type 89.

Not at all man. The Marines who first found this originally thought it was to be fired from the legs of the attacking mortorman due to the shape of the base. However, it was soon found out that there was too much recoil to do this more than once from the same leg! It's meant to be fired like it's shown in the picture. From the ground.

I havn't heard about the jump coys. That's just bloody ridiculous...So they plan on taking away any airborne capability? ****, they might as well shut the army down...Man, I thought they lost it when they planned to replace the M109's with the MAVS/MOBAT systems...

That's why I wrote the Type 89 was "believed" to be fired that way; didn't make myself clear enough, though ;)

The '51'. A 51mm light mortar which is basically a derivative of the WW2 2 inch mortar. Quite a handy weapon that is held at platoon level.

Since this is a mortar thread I could contribute a few photographs. Pictures were taken in 2003, by a platoon-mate of mine. All people in the pictures are Finnish conscripts, by now reservists.

Can you spot the deployed mortar, and part of the squad manning it? (120 KRH 92, Patria iirc)
Taken during a live-fire excercise. Waiting for the fire commands. It wasn't uncommon to wait for hours within the immediate proximity of a mortar. It could get a bit cold too, at times.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/lcorps/03-02.jpg
Two out of three trucks of a Fireplatoon (3x 120mm mortar squad + communications, deploying position preparement, calculations etc. squad) Waiting for the command to redeploy for a live-fire excercise. By that time we had probably been waiting for an hour in those trucks.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/lcorps/03-03.jpg
Two 120mm shells. Live. With a pack of cigarettes to give some idea about their size. The cigarettes weren't being smoked within within about 25 meters of them, though, since one spark on those blue things would have been a very, very bad thing. The blue things are used to give the shells some extra range. The maximum range is about 7km. The -+ -markings indicate the weight of the shell.

We do still have the 60mm in light and direct role, really do miss having the 81mm around though.... had alot of fun on my crse, and if we do lose recce (as someone else quote) then that will be a 2nd crse ill lose and will be useless to the infantry (on paper)

Thats BS. If they want to complain about being underutilised, then they should go on tours in the infantry role. Ours have done it, i'm sure yours can too ;)

because the armoured boys were also complaining they weren't getting tours; so they're getting all the coyote's.
when it comes down to it; we can blame all this **** on having a liberal government for 40 years; it's their fault that we can't do anything past guarding the gate of bases and claiming that we're doing stuff.
