Thosre are great pics, but the battle those guys faced was even greater.

How unlucky could you get then to be airdroped to an outfiting SS brigade. It was like shooting ducks in a barrel.

No the bridge at Arnhem was destroyed by B-17's in october 44, and the dutch had destroyed the original bridge in 1940 to slow the germans advance.

No matter how often I see WWII pictures, I can't help getting goosebumps thinking about the sacrifices that were made for our liberation. People should think about that a bit more often.

Definetly shame today's youth is ignorant about it. I cant help but think that when the last veteran dies it will be forgotten about! Except for teh passionate few. WWII is not even tought at seconday school in the UK SHAME ON YOU GOVERNMENT!!!!

I could go on about this...

Every year in september.. there are paratroopers(from netherlands, america, uk, etc..) jumping out of a huge plane (i dunnow the name, but its huge.. really huge) @ the Ginkelse heide in Arnhem/Ede
This happens all in memory of the ppl who died there in WW2.. Last year was the last year actually that some veteras jumped together with another paratrooper (at the age of 89? maybe)

Its a good thing that they do this every year :)
Even the major speaks a little word

Arnem is really worth visiting, you can see the bridge (!) Old AAA gun emplacements, walk over the banks of the river and gaze as far as the horizon imaging what it was like for the brave soldiers jumping onto Dutch soil (for people like my grandparents) with an SS division in wait.

http://img56.exs.cx/img56/7915/holland6kq.jpg

Of arnhem is not much more over

This is Nijmegen, not Arnhem and the damage you see was for the most part caused by an accidental bombardment by the Americans on february 22nd 1944. It was not caused by the fighting in operation Market Garden which only took place very close to the bridge(s).

It was bombed by the Allies in the beginning of October 1944 to stop the Germans reinforcing the Island. After the bombardment the bridge was still crossable for infantry. The Germans eventually blew what remained of the bridge into high heaven with so much force that it caused the remains of the church to collapse. (church was damaged by fire and artillery).
