First Pole dies in Iraq ambush
A Polish officer and two American soldiers have been killed in separate incidents in Iraq.
The Pole was the first fatality for the European state, which leads a 9,000-strong force in south-central Iraq.
He died after being shot in the neck in an attack on a military convoy at Al Mussayih, 40 km north of Karbala.
The deaths bring to 140 the number of US troops killed by hostile fire since President George Bush declared an end to major combat operations on 1 May.
Earlier US officials said that in Malmudiya south of Baghdad opposition forces had attacked a convoy on Wednesday night killing one soldier and wounding two more.
The second US soldier died when his truck hit a mine near the Huseybah border crossing with Syria on Thursday morning.
There were also reports that two rockets had been fired on Wednesday evening at a US operations centre in Samarra north of Baghdad.
No damage or casualties resulted from the attack.
The US and its allies have been facing daily guerrilla attacks and suicide bombings, prompting Washington to seek help from more countries in sharing the security burden in Iraq.
But it has had limited success, and the Pentagon is about to unveil plans to send thousands of fresh troops.

Of course not, but IMO there is a comparising between situation in Iraq now and in Germany or Japan after W.W.II.
Think, what these Iraqi fighters are doing in fact for their homeland and other Iraqi people by attaking coalition troops and Iraqi police. Do they think they will make USA and other forces leave Iraq faster?

That is called living in the real world. Nothing else but that. The world is not black or white but shades of gray. Nations deal with who and whatever aids their national interests. During WW2 the US and UK became allies with Stalin, and immediately afterwards became enemies in a 40+yr Cold War.
It is called doing what benefits the nation the most during a specific time. Choose to defeat the greatest danger and influence if possible the lesser. The US and all nations throughout the history of mankind does it.
It is naive and foolish to believe otherwise.

Nice theory except it doesn't apply here. The U.S. routinely deals with thugs, criminals, and mass murderers for the financial benefits of the few not for the safety of it's own citizens.

It's sad how the thread about a fallen warrior has turned into all this.
Translation form Polish Press Agency (PAP) news:
6.11.03 Warsaw (PAP) - Polish soldier died in Iraq - major Hieronim Kupczyk form 12th Mechanized Brigade in Szczecin. Polish convoy with 16 soldiers was attacked on thursday, early morning. Convoy was returning from american Camp Dogwood to Karbala. No one else was hurt.
For the first time, since polish contingent came to Iraq, polish solider was shot and killed.
The convoy was returning from training with iraqi civil defense corps, and was attacked around village of al-Musaib (Babil province) by unknown assailants.
Major Hieronim Kupczyk was shot in throat. He was immediately transfered to field hospial in Karbala, where he died, despite resuscitation attempts. He was 44 years old. He left his wife and a daugther.
Polish Army is conducting an investigation trying to establish identity of attackers.
"It is a great loss for all of us" - said general Marek Ojrzanowski, commander of polish brigade stationed in Karbala, where major Kupczyk was serving.
"Death of polish soldier in Iraq confirms, that process of recreating of iraqi security forces should be quickened, and decision should be made about "masses of weaponry and ammunition" still stockpiled in that country" - said polish defense minister, Jerzy Szmajdziński.
He added, that only proffesional soliders were sent to Iraq - "soldiers who have risk linked to their proffesion." Szmajdzinski also added, that commanders should put main endeavor in minimizing risk of casualities.
President of Republic of Poland said - "It is one of the saddiest days not only in my presidential carrier, but also in my entire life". He pointed out, that death of polish soldier will not change polish strategy in Iraq.
Prime Minister Leszek Miller stated, that on 11'th of november (Day of Regaining of Polish Independence) he will visit polish contingent in Iraq, and will be fully informed about all the details of polish soldier's death. "We will do everything to ensure maximum security for our soldiers" - Prime Minister also pointed out.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with His family" - stated on thursday for PAP Pentagon spokesman, capt. David Romley - Let's hope, that as Coalition, we will continue our efforts in Iraq, despite this tragic loss. President Kwasniewski was given a letter of condolences by USA ambassador in Poland, Christopher Hill.
Politicians of polish major parties, commenting of polish soldier's death, were pointing out, that participation of polish soldiers in iraqi stabilization mission is linked with danger of loss of life. One of opposition parties wants a debate on polish mission in Iraq, to take place in Sejm (lower house of polish parliament).
According to former defense minister, Bronislaw Komorowski (now in opposition), polish commanders must command well and correct polish soldier's equipement ( :cantbeli: - my own opinion about those words) to minimize risk of polish losses. According to another opposition politician, (polish) logistical services should be strenghten in Iraq.
Forgive me any language errors if you find any.

The Polish soldiery had no part in the large scale invasion of the nation, sure GROM was active during the invasion. But the Polish infantry here are only trying to secure the nation from Terrorists...you know the ones that infiltrated the nation before, during and after the war.
Iraq is the new theatre in the War against terrorism, its obvious that many Anti-Western groups are operating there...Also, when NATO Troops die the people who live in the NATO countries have the right to curse the enemy, why?
Because, the people who are killed are their Brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, mothers and their fathers...and if they aren't then they can at least bitch about losing all the money they invested in them, in Poland thats something like 25, 000 bucks. So really Spier...shaddap.
