I agree with princessRAR. There is no need to hide the faces of these guys, they are'nt SF and all the photos have been in every Australia Defence publication known to man. All it does is stuff a good photo.

It's a small Regiment and everyone knows everyone and if I don't want to share their IDs with people I won't, if anyone doesn't like it they can get fvcked. I don't give a rats arse if they are SF or not, diggers are shy retiring types and don't like having their faces splashed all over the place, it costs them cartons of beer and diggers don't get paid enough to splash out on cartons of beer left right and centre. :P

hows get ****ed sound? Alot of those photos are mates from when i was in 1RAR. Some now serving in SF battalions, or in the process of. If digrar has the common courtesy of blurring their faces out, good on him.
The photos of the 3 blokes at the end of ratamacues post were other digs in my section. It was taken in Hawaii at puk-a-loa (spelling?) training area. They arent cam'd up cos we were non-tac and just doing some range shoots.

Although Malaysia uses the AUG, I think this soldier is not Malaysian. The camouflage is different. The soldier might be a Filipino or a Thai trooper?

Nothing wrong with the optic sight.
I can get a 500m shot with the optic sight and 300m with the batle sight (luminex iorn sights ontop of the optic sight).
The elcan just gives great SCOPE - the OPTIC SIGHT is just 1.5x, I can hit a dead centre shot at 800m with the elcan.
Normally per section there will be 2 or so elcan sights, in a recon platoon most guys will have an elcan for day patrols and a nvps for night time patrols.
In sniper platoon all no1 snipers (spotters) use an elcan.
And about the photos - dannyC and dig I wasnt having a go, I was just saying there is really no need (people will start saying o look its SF their faces are blanked), I dont mind either way, hell I'd love people to see my battered and beaten face!

One of the first (if not THE first) army to have used the AUG in anger is the Omani Army.
They had several clashes with Yemeni armed groups on their border in the 80s.
And according to some, it's after thoses clashes that they decided to equip the SSF (Sultan Special Forces) with M16A2s....

I did remember seeing a photo of Malaysian troops marching during an independence parade and they were marching with the Steyr AUG.
The Steyr AUG was rumored to be used by the former Colombian terrorist group M-19 and the Corsican National Liberation Front did have some Steyr AUGs in their use.

The AUG used by the FLNC were civilian made AUG in .222 Remington, semi-auto only.
Those rifles were on offer on the French market for a few years before stricter laws made the purchase of such weapons only possible by people who held a certain type of firearms licence.

Yes, many jammed during those contacts.
That's according to the Omanis...could also be a lack of proper care or simply the fact that the SSF are trained by ex-British SAS & SBS who've used the M16 family most of their army lives and who were in position to influence the choice of weapons.
Anyway, the Omani army uses the AUG but the Omani SF uses the M16A2...

The M16A2 is pretty bulky. Do the SBS guys use a carbine or the full size A2?

It's not really a rail, the NAD comes in two bits. The base bit clamps on to the reciever group and then the NAD can be screwed on or off wothout loosing it's zero.
I don't imagine it's on the market anywhere.

do the aussies tend to put oil or anything on their roughout desert boots to darken them, or is that just dirt. And if it's dirt why are his kneepads so damn clean?

The boots are a bit like suede, the only thing you are suposed to do with them is brush them with the little wire and rubber ****ged, double sided brush. ^ They just look like they are well worn in.
It's not a very impressive barracks dress, along with the dodgy booney hats and no rolling of the shirt sleeves up. The days of black polished boots, schmick berets, rolled up sleeves and looking good are long gone.

So the Australian Army has gone with roughout leather boots for both desert and temperate environments? Sounds like what the USMC did and the US Army is doing now. I guess that even if it doesn't look quite as good, it's more practical in terms of camouflage and maintenance.

They are easier to look after, although I'm not sure what the considerations were for making them in that roughout style.
When I left they just had the one style of new boot, but there were plans for having two variations for different climates. I'm not sure what they ended up with, DannyC or PrincessRAR would have a better idea.
