A MEETING OF SUPERPOWERS

President Bush is to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at a summit in Slovakia.

The talks come amid signs of growing strains in relations between the two superpowers.


Mr Bush began the day by meeting with Slovakia's President Ivan Gasparovic and Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda in Bratislava.

After the talks, the American leader said the US and its key European allies were united in efforts to use diplomacy to end the standoff with Iran over its suspect nuclear programmes.

"We have a common objective - to convince the ayatollahs not to have a nuclear weapon," he said.

"We are united in that goal. Hopefully we'll be able to make a diplomatic solution."

Mr Bush is scheduled to meet with democratic activists from eastern Europe and make a speech to Slovak citizens in a local town square.

But the centrepiece of his day-long stay will be his meeting with Mr Putin.

It will be the first US-Russian presidential encounter since talks on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit in Chile last November.

At the time, Mr Bush reportedly privately questioned Mr Putin on moves that were widely seen as setting back democracy in Russia.

There are still concerns in the US that, far from supporting democracy, Mr Putin is simply gathering more power for himself.

Concern also remain that Mr Putin has granted privileged relations status to Syria and Iran, both of which are countries America believes are involved in terrorism.

The two leaders, whose once warm personal relationship has suffered since the war in Iraq, will meet for about 90 minutes.

They are expected to discuss how to improve security at Russian nuclear sites and the proliferation of shoulder-fired rockets

I know but the same could be said about america and britain supplying arms such as the well documented stinger to the afghans when the russian were in afghanistan. But i think both are ireleveant to the current situation.

stop watching Rambo flicks. USSR was never a superpower in the full meaning of the word. To be a super power you must control or highly influence 3 things.

1. satellite nations and foreign territories (or colonies) - USSR and US both had this

2. possess the strongest and most technologically advanced military force - both USSR and US had this

3. maintain aggressive and dominating economic markets, where other nations use your currency as a trading model. - US had this, USSR did not. USSR's markets were non existent and their currency was worthless.

The word superpower relates to the military and political aspect of a state. An economical superpower is a completely different thing. Japan is an economical superpower, just like Germany, France, China are.

The SU was a military and political superpower, it was as strong, if not more strong, as all of NATO countries united. In the 80's, it's true, SU had many economical problems, but after WW2 till then, it was an economical superpower as well.

As we discuss this Russia is in command of more than 20% of oil and gas reserves on the face of this planet, she has close ties to several other major oil and gas producers and has her hands on the throat of Europe. They are becoming economically entwined with the fastest growing economy on earth. China.

Russia is an economic superpower.

Russia has enough nuclear weapons to level this country plus a few others. Any army stupid enough to set foot within her borders will disappear in a series of fissile fireballs.

Russia is a military superpower too because she can crush anyone that threatens her.

i think its different comparing the selling of military equipment to iraq by russia during OIF compared to that of the CIA selling arms to the mujahadeen,

For one the soviets started selling military weapons and technoligy to North Korea during the Korean War and also supplied North Vietnam, Also this was the SOVIET UNION not RUSSIA, which at the time was an adversary not a supposed ally,

Macs, USA is great. I love being here in a winter, and in Russia in the summer. Must be nice to travel both countries when ever I want.

Its just gamedevelopment is in the early stage in Russia at the moment. So the experience I'm gaining in US is priceless. But the product I'm developing right now, has a lot to do with Russia.
