How good are they as hiking socks? Do they breath well? Thanks!

Get goretex boots and regular wool hiking socks. They aren't very good for preventing blisters.

I would only ever wear goretex socks whilst static. I would only wear them with goretex boots if those boots had got wet, and you have stopped for the time being and want to dry your feet. After drying/powdering your feet you then put on the goretex socks and then the wet boots, keeping your feet dry.
I tabbed in goretex socks once and it f***ed my feet up royaly. We're talking blisters pretty much all over my feet.
Personally, I don't like goretex boots anymore. My advice is, wear non-goretex boots and wollen socks (UK issue ones are cheap and chearful, they're fine for me) with coolmax liners (if you wear them) to prevent blisters. When you stop at night but need to keep your boots on, clean/dry/powder your feet and put on goretex socks, then your wet boots. Otherwise, wear a pair of neoprene 'beach shoes' to give your feet a rest.
As for sealskinz stuff, I had a pair of gloves and your hands sweat to death if you move in them. I had them on for 24 hours constantly and ended up with 'trench hand'. Only really useful if you are static.

Yes, that's been mentioned. (Thanks anyway.) Ive heard that wool is the only material that will keep you warm when its wet.

Sabre, why don't you like goretex boots?
For military purposes, goretex boots are less than ideal. Your boots are always going to get wet and when they do, the goretex lining holds the water in. That makes your boots heavy and it isn't healthy for your feet. Non-goretex boots allow the water to drain out through the seams as you walk.
For civvy hiking, where you can avoid getting your feet wet, goretex is ok. But I would probably now wear light/non-goretex boots in summer.
Happy to help mate.

After 10 years of testing and trying everthing I could find while I was in the Army, I found the best sock only after I got out... www.rohner.com
These socks are the best, the stay dry and the don't wear-out like others I've tried...They kit everyother sock in the ass. They have them in Winter and summer...The models that are good are th e (Grenadier) Working Boots and the Army Sock.

I agree with Sabre about the G-Tex boots, but this also depends on the climate. In northern and central Europe G-Tex is good and can be worn all year round. The same would aply to Wash. State and the North West and Canada. As for the South and Central and South American nothing works like Jungle Boots. Just be careful in rocky regions, because of support for the ankles is needed. With Fatigue, you began to walk wrong, you start to step mostly on the balls of your feet and this slidding motion causes lots of blisters, ( I remember the blood blisters on guys feet in this region) as for the ankles this is also a result of tiredness. I've seen some bad feet coming out of the ADF guys. This is where good practices of changing socks and propper boots do wonders. I never had great problems with boots in the Army, just that first day of Graduation from Inf. School and those ****ing low quarters...this is enough to make any man stay on jump status...

I actually have a pair of Sealskinz socks. Just got them the other week. They prevent water from getting in very well. The cotton part that cinches around your leg at the top of the sock wil get wet, but it doesn't bother me. I bought them for walking when holding the boat and going down to the dock, which is sometimes icy (rowing team). Otherwise we walk barefoot and role up our cotton sock and put them in pockets or the spandex uniforms. If you use them with a pair of wool or cotton socks, they'll keep your feet warm, but otherwise, they're just good to keep water out. if you're going to completely submerge your leg and want to keep your feet dry, you gotta get their hardcore version of that sock. Forgot the name.

Ask the Paras in Falklands how they feel about this boot.
It was the only unit in the expiditionary force that didnīt have trenchfoot!
And yes... you guessed right... they were issued Lundhags Military p-)

If you've read the book by Mike Curtis, Cloe Quarter Battle, he says different.

I had read something about the SAS trying to get hold of 'swedish ski-march boots' for use in the falklands. These must be said boots. Cool, i think I saaw these when I was over in Sweden in the summer. Might think about getting a pair.

mikebox: Lundhags has used pictures of paras in Falklands in their ads.
A plaaton of paras is gathered around a union jack and everyone is wearing Lundhags Military.
Maybe not all units were issued the Lundhags Militaryboot?
Sabre: You must understand that Lundhags boots donīt breath at all, but they are almost completely waterproofed.
The 'swedish ski-march boots' is The Lundhags Military. This boot is not longer manufactured but the successor (Professionall) is avaliable.
