I did a wicked cool Iwo Jima photo faded into a red background with the seal and bright yellow letters for the Commandant's letter this year on the birthday poster at work. Stupid secure network.

To the members of our elite Corps -- Marines, corpsmen, retirees and dependents -- Rosie and I extend to everyone a happy birthday on the occasion of our 238th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps.
In the past glorious days, men and women sacrificed their lives for America's freedom in honorable service in places like Guam, Iwo Jima, Tarawa, and Bougainville during World War II; and then it was Korea, Vietnam, the SS Mayaguez and Grenada.
And, like always, we stepped up smartly to the plate for the country, God and the Corps. We continue the challenge all the way from Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa and elsewhere around the world. Our brave men and women are standing tall to defend freedom and maintain global order.
Our plate is maintained at full level, and during these difficult times, our Marines know their cause is just, because it is the Marine Corps way to accept the challenge and to accomplish the mission.
Happy birthday, Marines! God bless America and God bless our beloved Corps. Semper Fidelis.
To spotlight the occasion, here are a few historic quotes about Marines and their abilities.
"The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines. Lord, how they could fight." ---- U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Frank E. Lowe, Korea 1952.
"Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines." ---- General of the Army John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, France, Feb. 12, 1918.
"I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world." ---- General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Korea, Sept. 21, 1950.
"We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?" ---- U.S. Army Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during the 1983 assault on Grenada.
"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. Marines don't have that problem." ---- President Reagan, 1985.
"Marines I see as two breeds: Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they always go for the throat." ---- U.S. Navy Rear Adm. "Jay" R. Stark, Nov. 10, 1995.
"You'll never get a Purple Heart hiding in a foxhole. Follow me." ---- Marine Capt. Henry P. Crowe, Guadalcanal, Jan. 13, 1943.
"Don't you forget you're First Marines! Not all the communists in Hell can overrun you." ---- Marine Col. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, rallying his First Marine Regiment near the Chosin Reservoir, Korea in December 1950.
"They told us to open up the Embassy, or 'we'll blow you away.' And then they looked up and saw the Marines on the roof with these really big guns, and they said in Somali, 'Igaralli ahow,' which means "Excuse me, I didn't mean it, my mistake.' " ---- Karen Aquilar, of the U.S. Embassy, Mogadishu, Somalia, 1991

Is the Birthday today?!?!
I have to go razz my favorite jar head.
Happy Birthday Devil Dogs! OOOrah!
I am an Army paratrooper myself.. can I share my favorite "Gyreen" joke?
oops too late.. 'ere it goes.
Kid was gonna pee in a airport bathroom. He walks in and sees a Marine taking a leak. He freaks out, "wow are you a real marine?!?!" The Marine replies,"yeah kid, do you wanna wear my hat??"
"Cool!" he says. And puts the hat on.
The kid is posing in front of a mirror, flexing, making faces, saluting, etc.. when he sees an Army Ranger walk in and stand at the urinal.
Freaking out again, the kid runs up to the Ranger "Wow! Are you a real Ranger?!?!?"
The Ranger replies rather sarcastically, "Yeah kid, ya wanna watch me piss?"
The little boy is mortified. Almost in tears, he looks in the mirror and then angrily tells the Ranger, "I'm not really a Marine, I was just wearing the hat."
woohoo! I love that one!

Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Hathcock, USMC
Silver-Star recipient and Marine Corps legend. He stands as a testament to the ability of a lone warrior, far from home or friends, to face incredible odds and persevere through sheer tenacity and knowledge that his efforts were in the service of his nation saving the lives of his fellow Marines. A quiet man, in many ways cast in the mold of John Wayne, who gave his all for God, country and Corps.
