Last thread I posted was Navy SEALS equivilant, this is NORASOC which stands for 'NORwegian Army Special Operations Command' So yes, these SF are Army.

Sorry for not clarifying earlier.

In Norway they are referred to as Bell 412. (and as far as I know, that is very close to UH-1N and UH-1Y)

I have a bunch of good pics of the norwegian spec ops at home and will post as soon as I get a chance.. The smock is part of the new soft shell outer layer uniform recently issued. Most likely it`s one of the earlier ones produced by a small norwegian company which I forget the name of right now. They are relatively thin gore tex type material.. The majority that are issued as standard issue now are made by Helly Hansen I think.
to madmike:aren`t all the spec ops units from all the branches collected under that joint command now? NORSOC or something similar. Even following the american example of attaching helicopter units to that same command for better cooperation and cotraining`??

Just remembered the company name was Cato Ringstad and as for where to get them, haven`t seen any original ones for sale yet, but decent (can`t vouch for the quality as I haven`t seen or tried them) copies exist and can be bought at nfmcaseb.no and miltrad.no.

I heard Bergens of Norway produces Norwegian Uniforms as well, or is that only for the desert uniform manufacturing?

Marine jaegers: Staff and part of rank and file are pro, another part of the rank and file are conscripts (used to be that way at least)

Special jaegers: All pro

Para jaegers: Staff are pro, rank and file are conscripts.

Recon: Staff are pro, rank and file are conscripts (unit not full part of the special forces community, though definitely not entirely "ordinary army" either)

The choppers are Augusta-Bell 412's. Developed by the Italian firm in main I think as a 4 rotor blades version of the earlier 2 rotor blades family of UH-1's. The pilots are quite good. Have seen them drop into some pretty marginal LZ's at night on NVG's with tall trees and power cables all arround.

You are mostly correct. The marine jaegers (comparable to seals) can be conscripts the first year of selection since you can apply to attend the selection course after basic training. If you manage through those phases you enter your one or two years of "on the job training" before you are active duty on the teams...
As for bergans of norway making uniforms, I have no clue.. Considering the relatively large number of sets ordered, it would make sense to use several suppliers since their production capacity might be limited.

For the uniforms part,
Our issued shell suits are Helly Hansen. I'm not overly impressed by the quality of the stuff, it resembles more a civvy type hiking outfit in camo pattern rather than a heavy duty military uniform. Quite a few of the HH sets have started to come apart after rigorous use down here, the older stuff done by Cato Ringstad apparently was much better, but i've never tried that version.

Our dessies are done by Bergans and a few some by Cato Ringstad, they're properly done stuff. Bergans have also done a goretex, or dermizax rather, version of the shell suit in Norge desert camo which is fantastic quality.
However, Bergans does not currently sell uniforms to civvies unfortunately.

As for the MJK/HJK bit, MJK puts their candidates on a three year program before being sent operational because they can pick up people straight from civvy street and into selection, it's simply not safe to let people blow stuff up for real in such a unit after only one years training. HJK theoretically has a minimum requirement of national service completed before being eligible for trying selection. However, in reality most of the guys trying out have many years behind them before attending, and pretty much squash the fresh guys out at an early stage. The exception being folks having completed Para- or recce oriented national service.

Cheers,
Marcus

Marcus,
Are you familiar with the NFM Caseb field jacket? If you are, how does it compare in quality to the Bergans and Helly Hansen shell suits?

lizzlano
03-10-2005, 03:30 PM
I have heard many people saying that they ar satisfied with the field jacket. NFM makes quality stuff. How it compares to tthe helly hansen jacket I dont know, but I would believe that they are pretty much the same thing.

Hey marcus, nice to see you again! do you happen to have an oppinion on the norrøna combat pack? Trying to decide wether to get that or a camelback backpack.. And is it possible to get any of the cato ringstad stuff anywhere?

Marsuitor
03-10-2005, 05:39 PM
Hey guys!:)
To get some questions answered;

Twominds,
Norrøna pack, isn't that basically the same thing as the issued patrol pack, but without the pouch panels? If so it's good stuff, you can pack alot of crap in it but there are much more comfortable packs out there. I personally use a BHI-style three day thing for heavier stuff like commos/GPMG ammo etc. For lighter loads the issued patrol pack is kosher, easy to get at the stuff and you can cram more clothes and stuff in it. I have the luxury that i'm sat in a car most of the time, so i can bring loads of extra amenities.
Some of the guys have also gone and bought motherloads at the AAFES which they find very good for comfort and capacity. I probably won't as i'm satisfied with what i've got ATM. I think Camelback will do Norwegian camo if you send them denier, give them a mail.
Don't know about Cato Ringstad selling stuff... When i was in Kosovo some of the guys gave them a ring and was hooked up with a sales representative. You might want to try the same if you're really looking for some kit.

Hadamar,
I used to own a NFM jacket back when they weren't issued and i found it very good. I think they were of a different cut and fabric back then, this was in 2001 anyhow. All the shell suits done by various companies are basically the same cut and look. As for who to choose, if HH does sell to civvies, i'd steer clear of their stuff if i was you. I'm not a huge fan of NFM as all the issed webbing we've got is falling apart and their prices really blows, but for quality their jacket easily beats HH. Just keep them away from velcro exposure!!!
However, IMO, Bergans is by far the best quality, but as said, they won't sell to civvies, and AFAIK they don't do woodland cammo suits, just desert camo.

Hadamar

Got cameras and thousands of photos ;), just waiting for the case to be blown over and i'll get posting again. Just the military being jittery about having another VG scandal i'm thinking.
Apart from that work and sleep is pretty much all we get the time to do, so leave definately helps.
