This photo was from the British MOD site. Reminds me
a lot of the scene at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan
where a bullet ricochets off a soldier's helmet and upon
inspection he gets shot in the head... This one stopped
4 bullets apparently.

looks like the bullet(s) went in the front middle and just went right underneath the fabric and came out to the right.. all i can say is that's one lucky bastard. i've seen another picture of a guy in vietnam that had the same thing happen and live.

I think it's also likely he wasn't wearing it when it got shot at

If you thought about it for about 3 seconds, you'd know that he WAS wearing it. If the helmet was sitting on the ground let's say, the first 1-2 bullets would have knocked the helmet back a significant distance. The second set of bullets wouldn't be so close to the first set if the helmet had been knocked around. Were you just trying to obnoxious?

steady...
no, but if it was one shot like david suggested... then it might have been, whatever it was it was pretty flukey...

Well, if it had been one shot, the enemy would have had to be standing 2 feet away from him crouching while looking up at him. According to the site it was 4 rounds that were in the helmet...

I have a book about Helos in Vietnam with a picture of a door gunner with a big grin for the camera upon returning from a mission. His helmet has a huge gouge in it and the slide-down face shield is completely gone althought he didn't know it at the time. He wasn't smiling later.

What book would that be Trigger?

My old man told me a story about a Cobra pilot he flew with that was in Nam.The guy had small arms fire coming at him like the 4th of July and one penetrated the cockpit, went in his helmet at a perfect angle and curved though the backside of his helmet coming back out the other side. That is one lucky bastard.
I did the same thing once unintitionally whole target practicing.Bullet went down range and behind the target was a concrete foundation block cracked in half.Bullet went in on the right side and went through the curve, coming back at me.Almost shot myself in the leg.

It's a book about 'Hueys' in Vietnam, I can't remember the title. I'll scan the pic and send it in.

Yeah that guy's famous now. I wonder if they're going to pull him off the line just to make sure it doesn't turn into a tragedy if he gets killed...Saving Private Shot_In_The_Head_4_Times

It looks to me almost like it was only (ONLY!) two bullets, in one side and out the other...

yeah but was i mentioned, the enemy would have had to be on the floor, 2 feet in front of him firing straight up at him.

Not necessarily, the bullets could ricochet after impacting the helmet right above the lucky SOB's face, and continuing up and left, away from the helmet surface.

The book is a thin paperback by Lou Drendel (I think). It's mostly photos & drawings of Huey variants. Good for building models & such.

I wonder if that guy has any emotional scarring or anything like that. Or was he just pissed off. Does anyone know his reaction?

"Hello, Dr. Laura?" "I've just been shot in the head FOUR TIMES!"
"I'm feeling a little resentment towards the Iraqi army" "Am I justified in feeling this way?" "I've heard some in the media say that to feel this way is barbaric and unjustified, but all I want to do is lob grenades at those sons of bitches and spit on their smoking corpses."

"Go do the right thing"

"Right-O, thanks Dr. Laura, I feel much better now. FIRE IN THE HOLE!!"

See and my first question would be, where was he that he got shot 4 times? Was he ambushed or was he just not ducking far enough down. Mind you I've never been in a war situation so the question could be chalked off to plain old ingorancy ;)
