Yeah! I think that was one of the strategic reasons why the Swiss put their country where it is today in the first place. ;)

I also read somewhere that one of the most challenging tasks they had, was getting all those mountains and cliffs were they are today.

The only guy that is not contempt about the situation is the Admiral of the the Grand Swiss Navy.

Switzerland does have a small navy of sorts. Lakes Konstanz and Leman (Geneva) form international frontiers, and their navies consist of a few patrol craft. Switzerland also has a major Rhine commercial fleet (you can see the Swiss flag flying all the way to the Netherlands), which military patrol craft in time of war. Both the navy and air force are branches of the army (like the infantry and artillery).

Why should the Swiss even have an Army if they never use them rofl

My former commander Colonel Schärer gives you the answer:

"If I never have to go to war, then I did my job good."

The best army is the army which never has to go to war.

Does Switzerland have its own Naval Special Warfare unit/s...similar to British SBS, US Navy SEALs etc?

rofl this is a joke, right? Decision to go to war is your country decision. Soldiers don't play politic except guns. I mean, how did you do a 'good job' as a soldier if you have no power over it(war)?

"Why should the Swiss even have an Army if they never use them"

Total resistance.

http://www.greglynn.com/swissnatdef2.html

"A 1940 Newsweek article characterized Switzerland as the world's oldest and purest democracy where, in three cantons, government was still conducted by a show of hands in public squares at the Landsgemeinden. The militia had no officer higher than a colonel in peacetime. "Even when there is no European war on, every member of this militia army of some 500,000 keeps his gun, ammunition, and equipment at home making the Swiss Government the only one in Europe which trusts such a large proportion of citizens with arms.""

cheers

Because it's better to have an Army and not need it than not having it and needing it. Why does Sweden have an Army? Or Austria?

However creating strong army that acts as deterrance to enemies is military job.

@mike: We have some divers, but that's all. We just have some lake's and rivers, we don't need such unitd.

The brandnew "Armeeaufklärungsdetachement" AAD (army reconnaissance detachment) will have a amphibian platoon.

@front: that's history, during the '60 our army had 600'000 soldiers. Now we are reducing the army down to 230'000 soldiers (inclusive some inactive reservists)
Some of the politician also want to disarm us. At the same day, when I have to bring my rifle back I will leave the army, no matter which day I have left to serve.

Swiss mercs were always welcome in other European countries. They guard Pope HQ in Vatican until our days.

@Kingpin: these days are definately over. We swiss guys are no longer allowed to serve in other countrys.

For example I also have the canadian citizenship, but I'm not allowed to move to Canada to join the army there.
I would have to go to jail as soon as I return to Switzerland.

and here are some more pics from the Grenadiers:

Seriously: he jumps in the slope (?), so he won't get hurt.

He's a Grenadier, usually they are a kind of weird.

He's a Grenadier, usually they are a kind of weird.Eh, Switzerland - land of banks, Milka cows and assault rifles in every home. Tiny, calm realm of ex-mercenaries. I remember the quote from the movie "The Third Man": "In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love. They had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." ;)
