View Full Version : American Valor
I recently watched a special on PBS called American Valor and it detailed the stories behind many of the still living MOH recipients. I found the website for it and you can also purchase it online on dvd or vhs. It was a great show and is very inspirational and I would highly recommend you guys check it out.
Conceived in 1860 and first awarded in 1863, the Medal of Honor has been awarded only 3,459 times to 3,440 recipients, almost half of them Civil War soldiers. (There have been 19 double recipients.) More than half of those who have received the Medal of Honor did not survive the action for which it was awarded.

Those videos are expensive...you can get "Girls Gone Wild" for only $9.99 :P
were there any black MOH recipients?
I don't know if they were highlighted on the program, but there were several African-American MOH winners during the Vietnam War and I believe approximately a half-dozen from WWII who were awarded the medal a few years ago years after the conflict. Also, there were several MOH winners from the 9th & 10th Calvary during the Indian Wars.
thanks just wanted to know. The media never talks about Arficans and African americans doing anything good for the US.I would like to know of black MOH recipeints, can u recomend a good source of info?
There's a book titled "Strength for the Fight" that's a history of African-American military. I'm sure there is something on MOH winners there.

Most of the reason you don't see African-Americans featured seperately anymore is because we don't segregate any more. Black History is still important because it's important in the relative history of the US. Only the races in question seem to feel the need to point out race in media today.
BTW I had a chance to meet several CMH winners, "Band of Brothers" vets, and "USS Indianapolis" survivors this year. Truly an honer and privelege to have met them.

I found this:
"We are pleased to offer you three different ways to research and learn about the brave African-American soldiers who have earned our Nation's highest award, the MEDAL OF HONOR. "

and this (worth a look):

This page collects the general info on the MOH.

It was a really great program. I would highly recommend it. Check your listings, because it may be rerun on the weekend.
For you guys that like to keep up with anything regarding Mogadishu, it does feature a good segment on Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart.
Thank you that was very helpful
