******* on another suicide(?) bomb attack:

Blast Hits Italian Police HQ in Southern Iraq City

BAGHDAD (*******) - A big explosion hit the headquarters of the Italian Carabinieri in the southern Iraqi city of Nassiriya Wednesday morning, wounding several Italian military policemen, the Italian and British military said.

"I can tell you there was a big explosion, I don't know if there were any casualties," Italy's Captain Marco Mele told *******.

A spokesman for the British-led multinational force which controls southern Iraq (news - web sites) said the explosion happened at 10:50 a.m.

"There have been a number of injuries to coalition forces," said Major Charlie Mayo.

In Rome, the spokesman of the Commander General of the Italian Carabinieri (Military Police) said "A bomb exploded in front of the military police base of MSU (Multinational Specialized Unit) ... there are many wounded among our troops and among the Iraqis."

There are around 2,300 Italian troops in southern Iraq. Many of them are based in the small city of Nassiriya which has been relatively calm since the U.S.-led war.

From AFP:

At least six Italians dead in attack on police base in Iraq

ROME (AFP) - At least six Italian Carabinieri police officers died in a truck bomb attack against an Italian police base in Nasiriyah, southern Iraq (news - web sites), according to Carabinieri General Guido Bellini.

Citing witnesses, Bellini told the ANSA news agency that a seventh police officer was missing following the explosion and a fire that gutted a building housing members of the Italian detachment.

Several other police agents were reported trapped under the rubble.

The lower house Chamber of Deputies and the Italian Senate suspended their sessions in mourning on receiving news of the attack, the first against the 3,000-strong Italian military contingent in Iraq.

Italy was threatened along with the United States last month in a recording attributed to the head of al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden (news - web sites).

Fire engulfed several vehicles in a courtyard and an ammunition dump, according to Andrea Angeli, a spokesman for the US-led coalition following the powerful early-morning explosion.

The Italian mission includes ground troops, members of the air force and police along with three naval ships and 40 Red Cross volunteers.

A Carabinieri official in Rome, Maj. Roberto Riccardi, confirmed that 14 Italians were dead: 11 Carabinieri paramilitary police and three Army soldiers.

Angeli said the explosion occurred after a truck rammed the gate of the Italian compound and exploded in front of the Carabinieri building, which was the former chamber of commerce (news - web sites) building. He said the force of the explosion was so strong that it blew out windows in another building across the Euphrates River. All the vehicles parked outside the stricken building exploded in flames.

Indeed, they were hitting a military target, as much as they may do terrorist things as a side job, and as much as their leader is a terrorist, they didnt hit civilians, hence they didnt use terrorism.

I think its time we say **** the raids, **** the police forces. THere is obviously still a war to be fought before we can further bring peace to Iraq.

I say we find where these guys live and congregate, and instead of raiding the place or surrounding it, we drop a good ole JDAM on it...

WE need to show these punks that we still have the firepower and force to make them do what we want.

8 civilians killed, over 50 wounded. Terrorists or not?

i'd say not; since the attackers targeted the italians, the dead civilians should technically be considered 'collaterale damage'

hey i didnt invent the word & definition

RIP guys.

I don't believe they're terrorists since their target WAS the Carabinieri. If I was to call them terrorists for killing civilians as "collateral damage," I would have to call the US terrorists as well.
