Mr Gaymard was told of the missing tax returns on 4 February
A criminal investigation is under way in France over the mystery disappearance of six tax returns, most belonging to prominent politicians.
One of the returns was made by Herve Gaymard, the finance minister who recently resigned for renting out one flat while taxpayers paid for another.

Two were filed by ex-prime ministers Laurent Fabius and Lionel Jospin.

Minister Claudie Haignere and ex-justice minister Robert Badinter were the other politicians affected.

Mystery motive

Claude Chirac, Jacques Chirac's daughter confirmed her return was also missing but had nothing further to say, according to Agence France Presse (AFP).

There was no comment from Claudie Haignere, the European Affairs Minister, according to *******.

Perhaps an author of detective novels who would like to establish links between these people

Sylviane Agacinski, wife of Lionel Jospin

Budget minister Jean-Francois Cope said in a radio interview late on Tuesday that the forms, all filed for the 2003 financial year, had been stored in the same Paris tax office.

The loss appeared to apply only to paper documents and the minister said that the tax details remained stored on a computer.

But who took the paper returns, and why, has not yet come to light.

There has also been some confusion about how many returns are missing.

Mr Cope said at a press conference on Tuesday that from a box containing seven forms, five had been completely removed and a sixth was missing an appended sheet.

Ex-prime minister Lionel Jospin has also suffered tax-return loss

Lionel Jospin was on holiday and not available for comment, according to AFP.

However, Sylviane Agacinski, his wife, told RTL radio that the disappearance of the returns was a "bit of a mess".

Asked who might have stolen the forms, she said: "Perhaps an author of detective novels who would like to establish links between these people."

L'Express, the French news magazine which broke the story, said the documents disappeared on 21 February, the Monday before Mr Gaymard resigned.

However, the French Finance Ministry said that Mr Gaymard was told on 4 February of the disappearance of five tax declarations made by people "for whom, according to common procedure, a special process is put in place by the tax authorities."

The special process means that for certain VIPs only a limited number of tax-office staff can enter their details into a computer.

It will be a monumental success if it ever goes to the ultimate resolution of this matter. But I have to see because I am skeptical. Its good for publicity. It will go nowhere, like the investigation on Chirac. ;)

Nothing common between the Chirac affairs and this one!
Here they suspect that a guy working in Budget office have rob some politicals sheets and gave it to newspapers!

In the same manner, someone in US administration gave informations to washington Post for that becamme Watergate!
