Hi there,

I wonder if any of you has heard about Warmonger. It's a defensive tactic used in Iraq by US troops against carbombs and suicide-attacks. Warmonger appears to be an electronic jamming device that will block a remote detonation signal. Soldiers have it in their tanks and humvees and put it on when they approach a suspect vehicle.

I can well imagine that this technique saves lives, but it has a serious setback: it also disturbes the American electronic communication. In order to be able to talk to each other over the radio, they have to turn off Warmonger first.

I heard about this on a documentary I saw on television on or around the elections in Iraq. The show featured an American patrol in Iraq, probably Bagdad, and during the patrol Warmonger was briefly explained as a new technique to protect themselves better against carbombs. In one scene I saw an officer sitting atop a tank, talking in the radio but having a poor connection, and shouting to someone "Turn off the f*cking Warmonger!"

The strange thing is, I cannot find anything about this on the internet. Tried various search engines. Nothing that even remotely relates to it. Still I'm sure I saw it, 100 %. A little less sure I remembered the name Warmonger right, make that 95 %.

Has anyone heard about this? Do you know it by a different name?

The reason this interested me has to do with the tragic shooutout concerning the Italian journalist, Giuliana Sgrena. As I read different articles about it, a few mentioned that apparently the cellphones of the Italians were cut off right before the shooting started. I remembered Warmonger, and wondered if the Americans had used Warmonger on the Italian car with the journalist. If they had, I'm sure it would back up their part of the story that they felt the car was a possible threat, or suicide-mission.

Any of your thoughts on this would be welcome, thanks!

It was used in Britain for years to stop the IRA or at least some thing similar. It was even carried in the panier's of Police Motorcyclist.
