1. To put into code or cipher.
2. Computer Science. To alter (a file, for example) using a secret code so as to be unintelligible to unauthorized parties.

I use Encrypted Magic Folders.
http://www.pc-magic.com/dl.htm#emf
It not only password-protects files, but makes them invisible. Every time you shut down, your encrypted/hidden folders automatically disappear. So even if a file shows up in the document history, if someone clicks on it, they will be told that it no longer exists.
It is shareware, so it 'expires' after a month. In reality, once the trial period passes, the only thing that changes is a reminder screen comes up for you to pay for it, but it still works the same. I have been using it for 3 years w/o having to shell out the $60. But if the reminder screen annoys you, you can always pay.

Not much point in encryption
if the man ie;the NSA wants whats on your drive, it will be broken, you can take that to the bank.

I used to use PGP when I was running OS8.6 but OSX comes with File Vault which is enough for protection of any files I want to keep secret. The whole PGP thing was cool until the company was bought over, now many think that the software is less secure than before. I do know that some PGP'ed files that were seized as evidence have never been broken or fully recovered by the police forensic labs in the UK.
Encrypted external drives with the HASP type keys seem to be a good idea.
