Too many damn yankees moving down here. They're offended and annoyed by our slower pace of life and bristle when we say, "Yes, ma'am." They get transferred down here for work and make it very clear that they do not want to be here in the land of "backwards hillbillies." 9 times out of 10, when someone is rude to me, they ain't from around here.

We're polite a lot more than we're mean. I think we take offense to certain things that aren't meant as offense. For instance, if I'm at the grocery store and I ask the cashier a question, I expect her to say, "Yes, ma'am," especially if I'm older than her. I hate when strangers answer you with, "Yeah" or "Uh-huh," or get your attention with, "Hey, lady!" It really sticks in my craw. The times, they are a-changin'...

The article is about homelessness, and how "mean" a city government is to the homeless. San Francisco and Berserkeley... two very liberal cities.
San Francisco has a CASH stipend for homeless people in the city (like US$400 per month if you're a homeless person), and San Fran is "mean"? Ridiculous.
I think it's a Left-of-Left-of-Left article that is cracking on the Left-of-Left in order to guilt more people into more aimless money pits (maybe we can emulate Vancouver, BC, and provide free smack for the addicts).
I live in Ft. Worth, Texas a few miles from Dallas. Everyone in Ft. Worth is real nice but a lot of people from Dallas are yanks who moved there, and boy there are some assholes in Dallas. I just hope they dont spread to Ft. Worth. ;)

Yeah yankees do piss me off time to time. I don't really mind most. I used to know a New Yorker that had to bring into every conversation that he was from NY and how everything was diffrent and how backwards everything was down here, didn't like him much. Plus he was a black feller ( omg J/k j/k ). Times have changed down here........ a lot of our accents are being lost, I know I barely have one anymore :( .

Let me get this straight, Little Rock was trying to close down "transient camps" those are those lovely little tent cities that spring up in vacant lots, under overpasses, in/near condemned structures, etc.? That's what earned them the title? Shame on the local gov't for attempting to clean up their cities, eradicate the filth that these "camps" generate and improve quality of life in their areas. There's nothing that attracts industry, capital investment, conventions and tourists like vagrants stumbling all over your downtown and setting up camps wherever they feel like it. Yep, that's what brings in the big bucks, not safe, clean environments. Oh, the shame of it.

I couldn't agree more. Yankees by and large are quite short on manners.

My sister lives in Austin and says the same thing. We grew up in a fiercely conservative household where *gasp* we were taught that, to earn our keep, we have to work hard for it and not expect handouts. Imagine that!
She says there's a protest every time people feel they aren't being handed something for nothing on a silver platter, courtesy of Uncle Sam. But, what can you say when you live in a town where 50% of the population is under 25 and on daddy's dime.

California is #1 and I find living here pretty reasonable, but I did grow up here so I guess I'm used to it. Atlanta a mean city? Not from my experiences. I dig the Southern hospitality! I wamt me a sountern belle! Hehehe

nah. it's the constant partying. it is the party capital of texas. (even though that's a legacy of the example set by the state legislature)

Seattle should be on top of that list. I routinley shoot at people for their inability to drive and whatnot. Just my acts alone should make Seattle at least as dangerous a Baghdad.

Are Southerners mean too, Molly ? :POnly to black folks. That's bull****. Yeah there are no racial problems in South Boston, North Philly, Howard Beach/Queens, LA, Detroit, St Louis...
BTW this is the standard that they're using for meanness:
...the National Coalition for the Homeless, a national advocacy group, that has named the top 20 meanest U.S. cities based on how they treat the homeless who live within their city limits, as well as purported civil rights violations...
We Midwesterners are kind to our homeless.
