The chief of the UK's armed forces has appealed for more Muslim recruits in a bid to better reflect modern Britain.

Chief of Defence Staff General Sir Michael Walker promised "fulfilling careers and high-quality training" for recruits in a speech to Muslim leaders.

He told the Muslim Council of Britain in London that he wanted the armed forces to reflect "religious, cultural and ethnic diversity".

Currently only 300 members of Britain's armed forces are registered Muslims.

Sir Michael emphasised his "personal commitment" to creating more diverse armed forces.

'Greater recognition'

He also paid tribute to the work the council had done in helping build "better community relations and increase knowledge and understanding of the Muslim faith within British society.

"The MCB has made a real and lasting contribution to the creation of a just and tolerant society," he said.

The general's appearance at the MCB meeting was part of the Ministry of Defence's attempts to show they were serious about recruiting more Muslims.

qbal Sacranie, secretary general of the MCB, praised initiatives to get more Muslims serving.

"The MCB welcomes moves by our Armed Forces towards greater recognition of the needs of its Muslim recruits," he said.

"The establishment of the post of a Muslim adviser to the MoD and the recently proposed appointment of an imam to cater for the spiritual welfare of British Muslim recruits are both commendable steps," he said.

Mr Sacranie said he hoped Muslims would become as much a part of the military as they had other areas of British society.

But Mr Sacranie also made allusions to recent events involving mistreatment of Muslim prisoners in Iraq by British troops when talking about Muslim involvement in British military operations.

"For this to be successful, however, it is imperative that the high reputation of our armed forces is zealously protected and maintained and not allowed to be tainted by any misbehaviour or illegal actions."

Besides the ideal to reflect the diversity of the country, it would have some more important advantages. Most muslims do have a much better knowledge and sense for the local state in middle eastern countries or Afghanistan.

On a sidenote, I knew someone in the Navy from Iranian origin able to speak farsi. When someone in the upper echelon figured out that farsi is same as dari he found himself immediately in Afghanistan :D

They should just focus on getting good recruits, not some PC lets get Muslims for PR puroposes. The Muslims that want to join will join so i don't see why they need to put so much effort trying to recruit them, and not other ethic, religious groups.

Sorry, but that is the general attitude from my muslim friends. One, even wanted to join the RAF once he left school, now he has no interest in doing so.

Mate, when I was at school including myself there were a whole group of gents who wanted to join the army and navy, from memory five or six army two navy
one wanted to do it because the navy was offering him a good deal
The other, well I think he was batting for the other side in retrospect :D
the rest, myself included all wanted to join the infantry, run around with a weapon and go brass up some bad guys
Want to know who did?
Including me, two.
The other fella was a good friend of mine for a while and as far as I know is still doing it
In the RLC.
He had.... problems.
Two of those who did not I've met since
Both were generally of the opinion "Thank god I didn't do that, so what have you been doing?"
(errr...)
Suffice to say many people lose interest, not just because they are of a particular faith.

Nice story. But he did actually tell me he didn't want to join anymore because of the recent Iraq war.
