I remember the day. I drove in my car and heared on the radio that a plane crashed into World Trade Centre. Accident? Terror attack? Nobody knew. Later I sat in front of TV and saw the live pictures. It was unbelievable that somebody could fly a plane into one of the towers wittingly. It was more unbelievable that it happened two times, with two towers. We were speechless in front of our tv when the towers collapsed.

We were also speechless when we saw George Bushs reaction when he received the message: none. :(

I remember saying to my mom that it couldnīt be a terrorist attack because nobody would be so stupid and start a ****storm for his own country/organization/terrorist group. Nobody would be so stupid and gamble away all sympathies a anti-america organization may have.

Then the second plane crashed and showed me that I was wrong.

We lost 23 NYPD police officers, 37 Port Authority police officers, and 343 FDNY firefighters that day. Before Sept. 11 the previous worst loss of firefighters in US history from a single incident was 12. The fire companies in my neighborhood lost a lot of good guys. Ladder 5 lost 9 guys and Squad Company 18 lost 7 guys. May they all Rest In Peace... Fortunately, I don't think Engine 24 lost anybody from their company.

I don't remember precisely how long the fires kept burning but the smoke kept rising for weeks if not months. For the first few weeks, lower Manhattan was very hazy as the air was thick with the dust. You could hold your hand infront of your face and see the sooty air between your eyes and you hand. You could also taste it and feel the particles of dust on the tip of your tongue.

The response after the attacks was overwhelming. I remember the firetrucks and ambulances from all over the country and from Canada, in the staging areas at 23rd and 34th streets and driving down West Street towards the huge cloud of dust at the foot of Manhattan which was illuminated from the inside by giant search lights.

Random people lined the highway clapping and yelling "Thank You" as rescue vehicles and teams drove by. Citizens were handing out water and food to the rescue and steel workers and handing out food and water to others who just came out to thank them.

I could go on with stories with from that day and the days after but it would be so long I'd have to get it published.

Rest In Peace to all the people lost that day...

Thats what its all about right now guys, that right there. I remember that day very well, my father was in the financial district on the roof of a building his company was building and he saw both planes hit, then the FBI/NYPD evacuated all of them. My uncle whos FDNY didnt come home for two weeks, and really has never been the same since. The EMS agencey i work for sent down our second-due ambulance almost as soon as the radios light up with activity and the NYS DOH asked for help. I went down with the first crew and its clearly somthing i will never forget. I have never seen carnage like that before. I apreciate the showing of these images because it reaffirms everything that the US is doing. No one can let this happen again to anyone or any country.

I was on my way to college in a bus when it happened. I heard whispers during the ride that something big had happened, but I couldn't hear above the mumbling. I got out of the bus, walked to my first class (about 30 minutes early), turned on the T.V., and found out the Towers were under attack. We watched the news for the rest of that class period while having some discussion. Everyone was quiet, some were crying. This was repeated in the next class. My 3rd class, the professor acted like nothing happened (he knew what had happened) and resumed class by lecturing as normal while all the students were just in a dazed/glazed look. The intercom came on halfway through and dismissed all students from our campus. I spent the next 2 hours trying to get out of the parking structure at CSU, Sacramento, and spent the rest of that day... and the next day, glued to the television.

When I was younger I would watch interviews with ww2 veterans and I was moved to see that even though 40 years had passed, they still got choked up just trying to talk about their buddies. It saddened and fascinated me how there was still so much emotion.

After sept 11 I now know what that is like to some extent. None of us will ever forget this- and we shouldn't.

Very moving, seems like it was just yesterday. When I think about it now its alot harder for me than the day itself. I just saw a moving documentary about it last night which almost brought me to tears.
May the victims of that day rest forever in peace.

As for those responsible, well your time will come if it has not already. There still needs to be more payback in response to this great tragedy, IMO someone has not paid nearly enough for what they have done.

"Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward, and freedom will be defended."
George W. Bush

"I can hear you, the rest of the world can hear you and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon. "

"Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve."
George W. Bush

that photo, as i recall, was the last photo of that firefighter, he was never seen again. Ive never actually been in a warzone before, thats one of the blessings i have found as a US citizen, but i think for anyone living/working in NY and anyone involved in the response and cleanup would say that 9/11 and the months after sure as hell felt like a warzone. It had all the tale tell signs, the smell of all sorts of burning materials, the dust, the smoke, the blood and death on a scale i had never seen before. As an EMS worker the first thing we did down there was obviously treat those who needed immediate medical attention. After that first day i had the bittersweet pleasure of partaking in the searches. I know that this experinece changed every American's life in a profound way. Any way you stand on policy is your right to free choice/expression, but when your 20 feet underground picking up body parts and chunks of skull i think you get a better understanding of what has happned and what needs to happen. I mean, these people cannot be bargoned with, their diplomacy takes shape with an AK-47 and a 7.62 slug and in this situation i dont see any recourse but overwhelming force. Its unfrounate, i mean, i hate seeing people get killed and i hate war, i think everyone with half a brain can say that, but when you deal with people like this there doesnt appear to be any other option. :|

I was literally in tears on 9-11. Not when it first happen. When if irst got word, i was shocked and angered. But the few days after, when seeing bodies carried out in flag draped caskets was commonplace, when it really started to sink in that this was the most profound thing that i would ever bear witness to in history, that was the hard part. I remember, i think it was on 9-13, i just sat down, poured myself a scotch and choked back tears for almost an hour. Hearing the news of the towers falling, watching the second plane hit the building and the two towers falling, it was the hardest thing i have ever had to live through, i think that day could very well be the most difficult day every American has lived through. There was just so much emotion...fear, shock, anger, sadness... the one thing that really helped me is hearing of the bravery of the rescue workers. it really showed me how good people can be, even when the worst things are happening. Not a day goes by when i dont spend a minute thinking about that day. The people who lost their lives. The change it brought in our world. and the bastards that were responsible.

I remember getting up early to watch the news as I always do. I don't remeber the occasion, but I was up a little earlier than usual (I'm 3hrs behind NYC).

When they said that a plane had just crashed into the WTC...I thought it was a hoax. My initial thoughts were it was a "War of the Worlds" type affair. Anyway, I flipped channels and saw it from different sources and angles. I was in total disbelief.

I ran upstairs to wake up my wife and let her know. She was somewhat groggy and didn't react initially. I went downstairs and listened to to commentary as the 2nd plane hit. I ran upstairs and almost dragged her downstairs. I do believe I was in shock.

What was most disturbing was listening to the news announcer. It was surreal to see this unfolding in front of my eyes. I really went into shock as the announcer stated that "a floor may have collapsed, etc" when in fact I could see the entire tower crumble. Due to his delay....it was obvious when he realized he had mispoken. His reaction was odd...because he was clearly in disbelief that the tower had actually fallen.

I don't think I'll ever forget that day as long as I live. It was the Pearl Harbor of my generation. If I didn't have a mortage and established career, I would have gone right back into the Army.

Except for joining the army, which I signed up for..

Moving pictures mate.

It's crazy to think this was nearly four years ago now. I saw the whole thing on TV. I was watching lunchtime news coverage of a political conference and then it cut over to footage of the first tower burning.

Saw the rest of it from then on. The second tower hit, the Pentagon, the collapse. It was just unreal watching it like a spectator.

Things have changed a lot because of that. I hadn't started Uni then, and I'm nearly finished now. I still think of the attack on Sep 11th sometimes, and it does give me motivation to stick when training is tough. It wasn't the reason I joined, but I think just how much i'd like to get the b*stards who did that and other atrocities. I know I can only do that if I stick in an 'suck it up'. A little pain is nothing compared to what those who lost their lives, or their families, went through.

Great Post.
I was in the air myself when the first plane hit, we arrived in the baggage hall not knowing what had happened, and there was a number of american tourists on the ground crying and then i noticed on the tv in the baggage hall what had happened. Straight away the first thing that came to mind was UBL. All the way home i listened to it on the radio, and when i turned on the tv at home the second plane hit.. live. After just stepping off a plane myself all i could think of was the people on the planes and a helpless feeling which still cuts me up to this day when i think about it.

Rare is the ocasion that i use the word "Hero" as i myself think it is used far too often, but everyone of those firemen were heros and are heros..and not only in NYC but in every country in the world.
