wouldn't this be more like a seldpropelled-artillery instead of a MBT?

kayaker

To me that looks more like a commander/scout tank due to the short barrel as opposed to an artillery piece which requires less mobility, speed and concealment yet does desire the accuracy of an extended barrel.

Stuga are considered assault guns that are used up front in the thick of things whereas arty is kept to the rear.

Those were called "Sturmgeschütz". It's not artillery but a gun without a turret!! That made it easier to produce and especially cost effective!!!!

Yes and no. Some sources say that they at least tried to fight with it.

But please dont talk about german protoypes and ubertanks. It will ruin the thread ;)
They have been talked to death in gazillion threads in various forums.

Here are 2 pictures of the panther in Cologne (I was born in Cologne)

why do some german tanks have those grooves etched into the armor?

Heinzi
03-15-2005, 12:53 PM
Do you mean the Zimmerit coating?

The Germans feared the magnetic mines, because the were very effective AT weapons. Ironically the Russians never used them.
The Zimmerit coating should reduce the magnetic effect of the armor plates.

Sure - no war crimes. He was in orchestra like all Germans during WW II. Being member of SS (excluding Reiten SS) is international crime - don't you know that? And all members of SS are international war criminals.
Do you know what 2 SS division made in Oradour-sur-Glane in 1944?

SS soldier != criminal

german wehrmacht still is admired today by many people all over the world for beeing one of the greatest armies ever existed in history. only morons reduce its role to some commited crimes.

If you are (really) interested in German tank warfare I can reccommend the two books from Heinz Guderian (preferably in German).
Achtung Panzer! and the "Erinnerungen". Dont know the English title.

General Walther K.Nehring helped Guderian to develop the modern tank unit and wrote an excellent book, too. Named "Die Geschichte der deutschen Panzerwaffe".

For these who want pictures and techfreaks, who want to know which radio was in which tank or vehicle, the "Encyclopedia of german tanks of world war two" is a good start. The lack of blueprint is sad though.

Pictures and ISBN of these books are on my homepage.
