BAGHDAD (*******) - U.S. aircraft struck at targets close to Baghdad airport Friday evening in the third successive night of "Operation Iron Hammer," an American drive to root out guerrillas and attack their hideouts in the capital.

******* witnesses reported several explosions around the airport, in the southwest of the city, after dark Friday, as U.S. planes and helicopters flew overhead.

The operation follows a series of guerrilla mortar and rocket attacks on the headquarters of the U.S.-led administration in central Baghdad.

Thursday night, U.S. forces destroyed a former Republican Guard building they said their foes had used to launch attacks, and struck more suspected mortar and rocket-launch sites.

"Our unit has been taking fire from this building for several days so that's why we attacked," a U.S. officer said.

U.S. aircraft also hit targets in Baghdad Wednesday, and killed two men the American military said had been trying to fire mortars.

I thought that the 101st was the legendary one.

Well, Steven Ambrose described some quarrels between troopers from 101st and 82nd. :D

I think, that 82nd division has longer history, than 101st. 82nd was created during the 1st World War. "AA" stands for "All American". 82nd was the first division (if I remember well), that was created from conscripts from all over the USA. Earlier, american divisions were created by each state.
In 1941 or 1942 82nd was transformed into airborne assault unit.

Correct me, if I'm wrong.
