View Full Version : Israel to receive advanced Apaches
Air force awaits advanced Apaches
By ARIEH O'SULLIVAN
The air force inaugurated a new helicopter squadron at the Ramon base in the Negev Tuesday, but it has yet to receive its first Apache Longbow attack choppers.
These sophisticated and expensive helicopters are to arrive later this month from the US. Once here, they will seriously boost the lethality of the IAF's multi-mission aircraft.
The new squadron was dubbed Tzira, or Hornet. It was opened in a small ceremony at the base which has undergone massive renovations in the past years to accommodate not only the new Longbows, but also two squadrons of the new F-16I which have been arriving in pairs over the past year.
Israel signed the deal in 2001 to purchase nine AH-64D Apache Longbows manufactured by Boeing. The cost came to about $500 million, which was paid for from US military grant money. The program includes aircraft, ordnance, spares, training and support.
The decision was made by then OC Air Force Maj.-Gen. Dan Halutz, who is slated to become chief of general staff in June.
The IAF says it still maintains the option to upgrade 12 of its Apaches to Longbow level.
The Longbow is an advanced, multi-mission attack helicopter and features fully integrated avionics and weapons and a state-of-the-art modem that transmits real-time, secure digitalized battlefield information to air and ground forces. The Longbow is the world's only fourth-generation attack helicopter. This means it is the only combat helicopter in service with the ability to rapidly detect, classify, prioritize and engage both stationary or moving targets at standoff ranges in nearly all weather environments.
The helicopters are expected to be armed with AGM-114K and L "Hellfire" missiles.
The historic Hornet squadron, set up 50 years ago, has flown several types of aircraft, including the Ouragan and Kfir fighter bombers.
"At the end of the month the first of the Longbow helicopters, the best attack helicopter in the world, will land at the Ramon base," said Lt.-Col. M, commander of the new squadron.
"This helicopter gives us great operational versatility required for the changing environment we live in today," he said, adding that the attack helicopters have played an intensive and crucial role in targeting terror.

One little correction. The Tzir'a isn't a new squadron at all. It operated the AH-64A for quite a time now, and its helicopters were transfered to the second AH-64A squadron.

Everyone is upgrading to the Longbow. I read a report indicating that the Army is supposed to be fully upgraded by the end of the decade.

Does anybody know if it's true that the US military grant money can only be spent on eqiupment made in the US or by US companies?

The OH-1 is an armed reconnaissance helicopter developed by a team headed by Kawasaki for the Japanese Ground Self Defence Force. The design features the tandem seating arrangement that is standard for this class of aircraft. A pair Mitsubishi TS1-10QT turboshaft engines drive the four balded main rotor and eight bladed shrouded tail rotor. The first prototype flew in 1996 with the first production aircraft delivered to the JGSDF in 2000. The stub wings can carry self defence air to air missiles or fuel tanks. The OH-1 was offered to meet the JGSDF requirement for an attack helicopter but the AH-64D Apache was selected instead.

Yes, i can only be spent on equipment made in the US, by American companies or a co-developed/manufactured by Israeli and American companies.
