The CF issues sewing kits with those buttons, big and small and also white ones, with all the accompaying thread and needles - maybe surplus stores have some of these kits

Thanks for the tip on the sewing kit, but I need more than just a couple. Surely there must be somewhere you can just buy a **** load of buttons. Who manufactures them?

I have heard these referred to in many quarters as "Canadian Taped buttons" - but did they originate with the Canadian forces?
I saw them in use with the CF on OG Combat kit when visiting them in Germany in 1976, however they were in use on some RAF aircrew flying clothing much earlier than that (e.g. Mk.3 Cold Weather Flying jacket/trousers, and Mk.2a Helicopter crew jacket/trousers and other garments).
Not quite a hikack of the thread but a small sideline perhaps! ;)

Do a search on www.lightfighter.net (you will have to register first). This subject recently came up in the "Roll Your Own" forum, and a link was provided to the Canadian manufacturer of the buttons in question. You can buy the large and small versions, in OG, Tan or Green. If memory serves, they are quite reasonably priced and even cheaper if you buy in bulk.
Hope this helps.
