Operation Artemis was the EU's first overseas peacekeeping mission.
9 counrtries deployed 1850 peacekeepers in Congo. The mainly French force's task was to secure Bunia, the capitol of Itury province, long enough to facilitate the deployment of a new UN mission.
The first advance party arrived at june the 6th of 2003 to secure the airport and the troops were gradually withdrawn starting from September the 1st in that same year.
