Hey guys and gals, I've been out of the military for a long time and was wondering if anyone out there knows what the velcro patches in black with letter number markings used by the US SF are for. Thanks in advanced. mikebox

Also, if anyone out there has pictures of any and other patches could post .

Someone have a rough start to their day today Ichabe? ;) As long as you make it clear its a guess I don`t see the harm in contributing it.. I`ve loved seeing some of your pics from your time as a peacekeeper btw.. Was it you that had that one of the turtle painted in the un colours?

First, hehe; I am happy as a clam as we speak. But I hate when someone is guessing, even if they state so. If you don't know, don't let your fingers touch the key board.

Second; So would I. Have not seen them pics for many many years. I need a scanner and I need it fast.

About painting turtles; that is a shame. I would never do that. Never.

maybe you should ask Hood to create new rule

"Dont guess !"

If he create that, I'll stop guessing.

Thank you

I just have a pic on my home pc of a turtle that they painted the UN flag on and had as a mascot in the base but come to think of it that was from UNIFIL and that`s probably before your time?

I am older than you think... I remember when Moses hit puberty.

(...sorry, was not my intention to hijack this thread.)

SOP for each unit is different. Most use it to show Blood Type. Some do use it as a unit identifier like cat eyes. There are a lot of pics in Shreks album and in the SF albums in contemporary photos.

Sometimes on radio nets, you use the first initial of your last name, E for enlisted, O for officer and then rank. So ZO4 would be Major Zoolander. ZE4 would be Corporal Zoolander.

Just a guess though.

Hmm that's clever, I like that. That's about as good as any explanation that I've heard. :)

Mind you I have no real idea! BUT one of the problems SF, and SWAT had was ID your own troops inside of a gas, or very dark room. You have to ID known friendlies on sight as fast as possible. Also after some of the mixed conditions, and uniforms we have seen over the years, it would seem to me that those tabs are his ID marker for his team. Unlike a radio call sign these would not change unless the situation demanded them to do so to work with other teams/units/operations. Radio call signs change a great deal.

I will also point out a few things. Wearing a zipper sign (like a flapping flag on the back) was ok for this, but because it flapped about it also made you a better target, would hang on things, could only be seen from the back, and would fold up. Using something like these as you rarely have both arms forward with a weapon would seem to work much better. IMOHO.
