NATO BOMBING OF SERBIA

IN MEMORIAM

This page is devoted to the memory of all those who died or suffered during the tragic three months NATO bombing aggression in 1999. Exactly six years ago NATO launched massive air raids against Serbia without the approval of the UN Security Council and without all possibilities for the peaceful settlement of the crisis first being fully exhausted by the international community. Although NATO claimed that the air attacks were directed against Yugoslav military targets and the regime of Slobodan Milosevic, thousands of civilians of all ethnicities suffered and died as "collateral damage". This is a moment to remember all these innocent victims who were killed in the name of "freedom and humanity" and to pray for the repose of their souls. The lives that were lost will never be forgotten; they will always be in our hearts and memory.

please. dont act like you didnt know that bombing was coming to you. If you want to blame anyone, blame milosevic for spiraling Serbia into the abyss.

So according to you, Milosevic was responsible for NATO strike aircraft dropping cluster munitions on the Nis marketplace (7 May 1999), Milosevic was responsible for NATO bombing a passenger train (Grdelica) and Milosevic was even responsible for NATO attacking a column of ethnic Albanians (Djakovica 14 April 1999).

According to your "logic" (term used very loosely) NATO was justified in breaching several sections of the Geneva Convention simply due to the fact that Milosevic was in power.

Try applying your logic to terrorist attacks against the United States (also a breach of the Geneva Convention) simply due to the fact that there are those around the world displeased with the Bush Administration. Does this justify their actions? Of course not.

The Geneva Conventions need to be applied objectively, not subjectively.
Otherwise they lose any meaning whatsoever.

I'd just like to say a big **** YOU to everyone from NATO countries. You have made an enemy of Serbia for all eternity, by attacking a country which has never attacked you or presented even a remote threat to you. You can't stay in the Balkans forever, it's only a matter of time before you will have to withdraw your peacekeepers and then we are going to take care of your precious muslims. Oh yes.

I don't know why western countries protected muslims anyways... Muslims want to kill all infidels (ie you).

okay, lets talk logic. First, let me say this. I have zero sympathy towards the albanians and the KLA, who are nothing but a bunch of thugs and terrorists, and have been asking for a Serb beating for a long time.

Now, with that understanding, dont come here crying about those vicious boys at Nato who bombed the **** out of Serb military. Milosevic was warned many times and threatened with an air strike, if he continued using his preferred method of combating the albanians, which was a mass genocide. Yes, the albanians (not all offcourse) were thugs and wanted to control Kosovo, especially Pristina, but the way that milosevic went about it, he was begging for a US/EU intervention. Dont give me that sympathy crap for the Serbian population, because you know exactly how the Serb army 'secured' Kosovo's villages and went about bombing the **** out of kosovo's population centers. Was Nato's airstrike fully justified? No. Was it a surprise? Definitely not. Milosevic shouldve known better than commit full scale slaughter of civilians and combatants alike, without thinking he wouldnt get punished.

Mass genocide? Are you kidding? Please cite any evidence that confirms that a "mass genocide" of ethnic Albanians occured or was intended. Richard Cohen and Jamie Shea have long since been discounted.

"Bombed the **** out of the Serb military"? Not hardly, considering the entire world watched the VJ Third Army withdraw from Kosovo virtually unscathed after constant tactical airstrikes. NATO's BDA totals have long since been discounted by numerous sources. NATO barely took out a company of Serbian armor. Not a very impressive showing.

Regardless, of course the VJ and MUP units in Kosovo were legit targets, I wouldn't argue that point. Civilians in a marketplace were not, passengers on a train were not. NATO clearly violated several tenets of the Geneva Convention in prosecuting their airstrikes against Kosovo. Serbian forces clearly violated several sections of the Geneva Accords regards their conduct in Kosovo. Perhaps we can agree upon that. However NATO has been exonerated by the ICTY (what a surprise) and indictments have been handed down against the Serbian commanders in Kosovo. Justice isn't selective, it's objective. Where is justice for those civilians killed by NATO airstrikes in FRY?

We are in agreement here, but Kosovo was always a point of political grandstanding for Milosevic. I applaud the manner in which the VJ and MUP sent the KLA running back to Kukes with their tail between their legs, but I don't condone crimes against civilians for any reason. Kosovo played into the hands of the extremist elements on both sides. After Ramboullet both sides were backed into the proverbial corner. NATO had been waving the "Sword of Damocles" spectre of airstrikes for so long they had to floow throuh or lose any credibility. And what better way to justify continued NATO expansion in the post Cold War era then involving your forces in a small-scale regional conflict?

The rest of us, me included, have not a hope of being objective. On one side, you have the CNN brainwashed. Spoon-fed one-sided accounts of Serbian atrocities - with little inkling of atrocities against Serbian populations that were taking place at the same time - and folks from the other sides in the conflicts (who granted have a right to stick up for their own nations). On the other, you have nationalist Serbs. I include myself in that category, with some qualifications.

Since we always come across as the more emotional, unreasonable people, I bet we get banned first.

Serbs are not "someone else", they are family.

As for solving Chechen problem - there are too many people in Russia who are interested in keeping that problem alive.
The problem was created by certain people in Russia and it is kept alive by them too.
In short - westerners don't understand why, how and what has and still happening over there, so lets just leave it at that.

Like the build-up to the invasion of Iraq, the media coverage in the spring of 1999 was a series of fraudulent justifications, beginning with US Defence Secretary William Cohen's claim that "we've now seen about 100,000 military-aged [Albanian] men missing... they may have been murdered." David Scheffer, the US ambassador at large for war crimes, announced that as many as "225,000 ethnic Albanian men aged between 14 and 59" may have been killed. Blair invoked the Holocaust and "the spirit of the Second World War". The British press took its cue. "Flight from genocide," said the Daily Mail. "Echoes of the Holocaust," chorused the Sun and the Mirror.

By June 1999, with the bombardment over, international forensic teams began subjecting Kosovo to minute examination. The American FBI arrived to investigate what was called "the largest crime scene in the FBI's forensic history". Several weeks later, having not found a single mass grave, the FBI went home. The Spanish forensic team also returned home, its leader complaining angrily that he and his colleagues had become part of "a semantic pirouette by the war propaganda machines, because we did not find one - not one - mass grave."

In November 1999, the Wall Street Journal published the results of its own investigation, dismissing "the mass grave obsession". Instead of "the huge killing fields some investigators were led to expect ... the pattern is of scattered killings [mostly] in areas where the separatist Kosovo Liberation Army had been active." The Journal concluded that Nato stepped up its claims about Serb killing fields when it "saw a fatigued press corps drifting toward the contrarian story: civilians killed by Nato's bombs ... The war in Kosovo was "cruel, bitter, savage; genocide it wasn't."

One year later, the International War Crimes Tribunal, a body effectively set up by Nato, announced that the final count of bodies found in Kosovo's "mass graves" was 2,788. This included combatants on both sides and Serbs and Roma murdered by the Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army.

Lots of bad things on both sides. there are no good-bad guys.

Clinton was mad at Milosevic, since they are both dirty liers, and he didnt give a fak about Albanians, as American government is not right now, with the unemployment rate on Kosovo over 90% and 0$ exports. He decided to take out dictator and thank him for that. But the bombs were little too much.

And thats all. Kosovo is now country without eletricity (4 hours per day), without economics and without hope.

Serbs were killing Albanians and viceversa.

It is like trying to find who was right about Israeli-Palestinian war. Everyone is right, and everyone is wrong.

About those antisemit graphitis in Belgrade. It is very sad that administrator of this forum does not know what was and still is relation between Jews and Serbs, and the destiny that we were sharing together even now.. Acts of few cannot be generalized and sticke to nation as a whole.

If Administrator minds I would like to post few web sites tht are being host in States.

Before NATO went in Serbs killed Albanians, but mostly just kicked them out of their houses. Now that NATO is there the Albanians kill the serbs or make them leave their homes. One so called crime replaced by another. NATO should have just left them to each other and let them sort it out themselves.

Civilian losses will sadly always be a part of war, even with today’s high tech precision weapons. The weapons can be how “smart” they will, but as long as there are humans selecting the targets the factor of human error during a modern war can be catastrophically, especially for the civilian population. In a sign of reviving nationalism and anti-Semitism, hate messages against Serbia's Jews, human rights groups and a leading pro-Western broadcaster appeared in the capital Belgrade on Tuesday. if we could find Serbia on a map we'd come sort you out, but **** we can't ;)
Note to self; Next time reschedule all imperialist NATO agression bombing missions at least two weeks before or after St. Paddy's Day ...

I don't see relation with the topic. 3 boys aged 17 which wrote few ant-Semitic graffiti don't represent entire Serbian population, same things happen across Europe.
BTW I've read that it happens in Serbia because somebody made list (very long) of people which participated in break of Yugoslavia and aggresion on Serbia and the most of them were Jews; also some US congressmen which are Jews want indenpendent Kosovo and the biggest reason is because B92 TV station which spits on Serbs, our army and Orthododox Church is financed by Sorosh. Yes, but most of those photos are about dead KLA members with few photos of collateral damage (term used by Nato). I don't say Serbs didn't commit any war crime, unfortunatety crime are commited in every war (Vietnam, Avganistan, Iraq...).

I guess that someone would say how we Serbs are brainwashed by Milosevic's propaganda, but we are not. Most of us were able to watch CNN, Sky News and other western TV station during the bombing but those starions weren't better than our state TV.

Yes, I have already said it on other topics, it happens in every war, but what I want to say is that crimes commited by our forces are much enlarged by media, some of the crimes claimed by CNN have never happened.
I have just checked other pages of that link, it is Albanian site (only they say "Kosova") with some of the incorrect facts, note name of the places - Racak and Drenica, both were notorious terrorists' strongholds, while I have never heard for "Lybeniq" (Albanians renamed it, don't know it's real name) so I can't say anything about that one. Those killed in Racak and Drenica were terrorists. After police has left them terrorists from other places came and dressed them in civilian clothes. To impress world about Serbian brutality they massacred
some of the bodies, even decapitated one of them (too bad I don't have that article on English). Women fight for KLA too - here's a photo
http://img55.exs.cx/img55/6987/erindamuriqi9eo.jpg
as well as some old people which were shooting on police from their houses. The most of the problems about civilian casualities were happening when police surround house with terrorists inside and terrorists refuse to surrender their family members despite police's guarantee that family member will be OK, instead they start shooting. About cutting throats - I heard that our police performed "silent liquidations" of enemy sentries before operation starts. Here's link about Racak: http://emperors-clothes.com/gilwhite/ranta.htm

I can confirm that females fought for the KLA in significant numbers.

You folks shouldn't believe everything you see/hear. We went into Kosovo remembering that the world still thought us nothing but murderers, rapists and genocidal maniacs. So we actually *took care* when choosing and liquidating targets. Why ask for more bad press?

How many bodies did you find? Less than 10,000? How many of them were men of fighting age who, in all likelihood, were UCK/KLA?

Albanian civilians were not the main victims of this war.

I mean come on we're all aware about the zionist conspiracies and jews owing all the money
As for the kicking the corpse picture : well it depicts war like it really is, sad, unfair, and dirty - not like in the movies or on TV.
If it was an american soldier kicking a dead iraqi : the whole forum would have said: the dead man must have been an insurgent dressed like civilian, or a suicide bomber.

Lokos,

As I understand you have served in the Serb military/MUP, I reckon you must be in posession of photos from your tour in Kosovo, why don't you post some of them, I'd be interested in seeing pics from that side of the conflict.

What can you tell about two paramilitary groups called Grey Wolfes and White Legion, apperently they both saw action in Kosovo and included foreign nationals in both of them.

You don’t hear the Germans or Japanese on this board bitching about it. Yes it’s terrible but it’s done. Live with it.

You don't think 50 years of western propaganda might have something to do with the attitudes of modern Japanese and Germans?

Why shouldn't they dislike an organisation that bombed them within the last decade?

And besides they have no choice but to "live with it", anyway. Doesn't mean they should like it, or accept it. They know that NATO, the US and the EU is not their friend, why pretend otherwise?

the same scheme all over again:
Serb makes a post about nato bombing.
USA/Israeli/NATO member accuses the Serb of genocide
USA...: calls him communist
Russian "american": tries to act american as much as possible and make a huge post about the evilness of communism, because he didn't have a color TV in 1987
USA: reads half of it and proudly concludes: Russia is evil
Serb: being a slav, steps in for Russia
USA, Immigrant, Nato: call him communist and the same as russian.
Finally Russia (USSR: because for an american there is no difference) is blamed for everything. Whoever disagrees is a pinko-commie-alcoholic-child-killer-bastard or and USA#1

Yea thats the pattern we follow here...

Neither Gray Wolves nor White Legion fought in Kosovo. Gray Wolves were disbanded after the war in Bosnia, White Legion fought in Zaire.
About White Legion:
http://www.survival.h1.ru/army_wl.htm

Also, some photos of mecenaries in Zaire on Serbian Special Forces thread:
http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33766&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=240

Hmm, more complicated than that because French secret service was involved too.
As I know Dominique Petrusic, leader of Serbs in Zaire, ex member of Foreign Legion, Yugoslavian/Serbian and French spy worked for French intelligence. French said that they were helping Mobutu to remain in power, but in fact they did everything they could to weaking him and to help Kabila's forces to win. For example Mobutu's financial adviser Steve Henke advised him to pay hundreds of $$$ for each knife for the army. Mercenaries' real task was to create impression for Mobutu how everything is going well. French planned to kill all Serbian mercenaries, but experienced soldiers expected something like that, so they blew up an airport together with huge quantity of weapons and escaped.

I have read that in an article about Petrusic. Hope it helps.

The decision to bomb Serbia was made long before "massacres" which Nato used as excuse for aggression. If your governments are such defenders of poor refugees why they didn't stop Turkey massacring Kurds, Sri Lankans fighting Tamil Tigers, Israel killing Palestinians etc? Read this and then decide was bombing correct move and was it our fault http://eairc.boom.ru/contrib/jatras.html
BTW I think that the biggest destabilisation factors in the Balkan are foreign policies of USA and of some Western Europe countries - USA supported Izetbegovic in Bosnia who was for war instead of Bosnian Muslim politician Abdic who was for peaceful agreement; Slovenian and Croatian paramilitaries were trained in Germany for terroristic actions in former Yugoslavia, German instructors trained and armed KLA terrorists and so on...

So because a leader of a country solved and internal problem a way that NATO didn't like they bombed that leaders country? How many did they kill because of this? Apart from threats what support did they offer? Serbia had a problem with a terrorist organisation called KLA and the way they dealt with it might not have been pretty but how is the problem solved now? Seems to me to be reversed. And for what? How much money did it cost NATO to turn genocide into genocide? What sort of crappy result is that?

They were albanian refugees, why not send them to albania?

So what you are basically arguing was that NATO bombed Serbia and Kosovo because they didn't want to deal with albanians in the EU or NATO countries? If Serbia had bombed albania and forced them to take back their citizens would that have made it all right?

Funny really because there are plenty of albanians in europe anyway...

According to your logic Serbia was bombed because "hordes of piss poor Albanian refugees" threatened the stability of neighboring NATO and EU countries...

Refugees continue to flee Albania for Western Europe in large numbers to seek a better future in Western Europe. When can I expect to see NATO airstrikes against Albania?

All places on that list were terrorists' strongolds. Drenica is notorious since 1981 when local Albanians killed a group of policemen. Check list of killed civilian in Prekaz and you'll see name Adem Jashari who was one of the highest ranked commanders of KLA. Here is photo of him, doesn't look like civilian to me
http://www.al-today.com/images/AdemJashari-aksh2.jpg

Also some of the captured weapons in Prekaz, why do "quiet civilians" need it?

http://www.pogledi.co.yu/galerija/aj/1V.jpg

BTW if killed "civilian" has surname Jashari or Mazreku you can be 99.99% sure he was a terrorist.

To our Serbian friends, and I do mean it. Even though many of the Serbs in here are of the type we would call "Hard liners." This picture is taken outside the bar/cafè Castel in Obilic, Kosovo in 2000.
So? What is so special avout that place you might ask? This place was one of the few Serb businesses that was still open. Because of that, they had to pay a prize. The Albanians used that shop as a hand grenade range. Quite often a hand grenade was thrown in to the shop. Because of that, we Norwegains was not allowed to go there because of the risk.
But we soon boycotted that order. To show the Serbs that we were there to protect them aswell, we always used to visit that place. Many Norwegian soldiers went there against orders to show that they were not intimidatet by thugs.
We also used to visit Serbs at their homes, to check if they were alright. We knew that we could not protect them 24/7, but we tried. Belive me, the Serbs in and around the Norwegian battalion appriciated that.

I could tell you Serbs even more what we did for the Serbs who remained in Kosovo, but I guess you would just ignore it, not belive it or denie it. Hopefully your closed minds will open one day and see that you still have friends out there. And I am not speaking about the Russians.

Ichhabe,

You have my respect as a human being and a soldier. My hat off to you.

Upfrontreporting,

We didn't have much contact with paramilitaries. Too many of those people were 'warriors' rather than soldiers. You know what I mean? Good morale, not much skill, lots of blood thirst. All 'round unpleasant folks. Some of them were murderers given paroles for service. Whenever I heard of an atrocity, I thought: paramilitaries. Cowboys, you know? It was made clear to us regulars that the international image of the Serbian nation was paramount - and that we had to use kiddy gloves when smashing pockets of insurgents.

A lot of guys we lost became casualties because we hesitated to employ force against 'sensitive' areas with lots of civilians.

Regarding photos:

I do have a few, I won't deny it. Looking back, though, I don't know why we took them. Some of them are not pretty, you know?

And a lot of them have some friends I'll never see again.

We were recon specialists. Also known alternatively as 'diverzanti' (I suppose it can be translated as 'diversionaries'?). The nature of the combat in Kosovo was such that by the time the cavalry arrived the action was already over a lot of the time. We took disproportionate casualties.

I'm going back to Serbia next year to visit some relatives and light a few candles over at our old barracks. They have a shrine there with the pictures of all the men who became casualties during the war and the Presevo campaign.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd love to share the pictures, but too many of them are not mine to share...

Without intention to start flamewar - I thought about Nato's daily press reports during the bombing, about CNN, SkyNews, BBC and all other media stations "advised" by Ruder Finn; Richard Holbrooke, US representative for Balkan called us "murderous a**holes". That is my opinion.
