U.S. Calls On Bulgaria Not To Set Iraqi Withdrawal Date
By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, SOFIA

The U.S. ambassador to Bulgaria, James Pardew, called Mach 24 for the Bulgarian parliament not to set a definite date for the withdrawal of its troops from Iraq, a parliament spokesman said.

The request came a day after the Bulgarian defense ministry said it would pull the some 450 troops out of Iraq by the end of the year.

“The request ... was to not necessarily set a deadline for withdrawal of Bulgarian contingent from Iraq,” spokesman Borislav Velikov told journalists after talks with Pardew.

Pardew also called for Bulgaria “to take into account the concrete circumstances and conditions in Iraq and the progress towards democratization after the new Iraqi parliament adopts a constitution,” Velikov added.

The defense ministry proposal was submitted March 24 to the cabinet, which should adopt it within a week. It then goes to parliament for final approval
