If I remember right - that was a Dutch fireworks factory.

EOD does try to control their explosions - even if they do live by the motto of overkill.

cheers,

Yep, it was a fireworks depot called S.E. Fireworks in Enschede, Holland. This happened on May 13 2000. A complete block burned down, 350-400 houses were destroyed. 21 people died, and 944 got injured.

I was going to make a humorous comment.....until I read the death toll....

I am a firefighter, and I don't envy the guys who turned up to that one.

Absolutely amazing! You read about that stuff happening in China several times a year, it seems.

RIP to the victims.

I got something else that'll put that explosion to shame.

On May 4th, 1988, the Pacific Engineering & Production Co. plant in Henderson caught fire. After the plant's emergency crew failed to extinguish the fire, the plant exploded with a force equivalent to a 3.5 Richter-scale earthquake. It obliterated the facility, which produced ammonium perchlorate, a rocket fuel oxidant.

In google, do a search for PEPCON explosion

Similar accident happened in France on September 21st, 2001.

In the wake of the 9/11 (only 12 days later), everyone thought of a terrorist attack but it was not.

Hi-rez pictures of the damaged area could be seen here :

A huge explosion ripped through AZF (Azote de France) fertiliser factory in an industrial zone on the outskirts of Toulouse, southwest of France, at 10:15 am, Friday 21 September 2001. 31 people are reported dead. The total number of injuries is 2,442. More than 350 people were in the plant at the time (266 AZF employees and 100 subcontractors).

The explosion had occurred in a warehouse in which granular ammonium nitrate was stored flat, separated by partitions. The amount is said to be between 200 to 300 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, which is used to make fertilisers.

AZF (formerly named ONIA) is the name under which Grande Paroisse, France's largest fertiliser manufacturer, sells its products. Grande Paroisse is owned by Atofina, the chemicals unit of TotalFinaElf - the world's fourth-biggest oil group.

The AZF plant was opened in 1924 in what was then countryside, but the urban sprawl from Toulouse led to homes being built close to the plant's giant chimney stacks.

AZF is located near two other chemical works, Tolochimie and explosives maker SNPE (Societe Nationale des Poudres et Explosifs), and upwind from the suburbs it adjoins.

The AZF site is one of 1,250 factories in France classified as high-risk.

Impact

The blast blew out windows in the city centre 3 km away and created a 50 meter- diameter crater with more than 10 meters deep. Telephone lines were immediately cut and the lines were affected as far as 100 km away.

Experts said the explosion was the equivalent to an earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale.

More than 500 homes became uninhabitable and almost 11,000 pupils stayed at home for several days after some 45 schools and colleges were damaged with 3 totally destroyed.

The force of the blast toppled two chimneys at the chemicals plant, which produces nitrogen and phosphate products used in the making of explosives.

The director of an ammunition factory nearby, owned by the Societe Nationale des Poudres et Explosifs, said there had been a second, lesser explosion there as a result of the original blast at neighbouring AZF, but nobody was injured.

An electrical goods store 300 meters from the AZF plant collapsed 45 minutes after the explosion. A nearby school was evacuated amid fears it too would collapse.

Flights to Toulouse, one of France major city with 700 000 inhabitants were rerouted to other airports.

Up to 6,300 tonnes of liquefied ammonia, 6,000 tonnes of solid ammonium nitrate and 30,000 tonnes of solid fertiliser were kept at the installation. Up to 400 firefighters searched for survivors through the wreckage from the blast, piled up to 10 meters high in some places.

A red cloud was seen near the factory following the blast on Friday. Police initially urged local people to stay inside their homes, because they thought it could be an ammonia leak, though later tests showed there was no danger of poisoning and the alert was lifted.

The damages total cost is estimated to US $1.5 billion.

So the big question is, what caused it? Why was that camera guy so close to it, and why was he filming it before it started going off? The whole thing seems like it was set intentionally, aka arson.

fireworks are illegal in Illinois yet almost everyone uses them.

fireworks store explosions aren't as rare as some people think. just add a spark, and you're going.

What's great is to see them sold at every gas station in Indiana where they're legal. You get a giant box of stuff with every fill up just before the 4th of July. Nothing like explosives, gasoline, and cheap beer all at one easy location.

hehehe. one year the illinois police wanted to 'get tough' so they monitored 'border-stores' for illinois plates. they quickly realized that it was extremely inefficient because they couldn't open the trunks  .

that's why some people 'i know' ( ;) ) buy their fireworks after the 4th of july and save em for a year. they still work pretty well.
