BEIJING - Raising the stakes in an already tense situation, China threatened in remarks published Wednesday that "the use of force may become unavoidable" if the island pursues independence — the mainland's strongest statement in years against its archrival.

But Wang Zaixi, a top mainland official who deals with the Taiwan issue, also said China felt close to the Taiwanese people and was "not willing to meet at the battleground."

Wang, vice-minister of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said curbing Taiwan's efforts toward independence is the main goal of the mainland, which will go to war if necessary.

"If the Taiwan authorities collude with all `splittist' forces to openly engage in pro-independence activities and challenge the mainland and the one-China principle, the use of force may become unavoidable," Wang was quoted as saying in the China Daily.

Separatists were "set to pay a high cost if they think we will not use force," Wang said. "Taiwan independence means war."

Both the Chinese Cabinet's Taiwan Affairs Office in Beijing and the Mainland Affairs Council in Taipei had no immediate comment on Wednesday.

Beijing has long threatened the use of force against Taiwan if it formally declares independence, but rarely so dramatically. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949, and Beijing insists that Taiwan belongs to China and must accept eventual unification.

The article in China Daily, a state-controlled, English-language newspaper with a wide foreign audience, ran under a bold headline: "Independence stance may trigger war."

Wang's remarks came as Taiwan prepares to elect a new leader next March. Recent public polls show that President Chen Shui-bian has gained popularity with voters since he came up with plans for a new constitution last month. He has also introduced a law referendums that could lead to citizens voting on Taiwan's independence.

The introduction of a new constitution and referendums are "extremely dangerous behaviors," Wang was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua News Agency. He was speaking at a seminar on cross-straits relations.

"That Chen is using ... presidential running tools to get himself re-elected and to push our Taiwanese compatriots to the brink of conflict with the motherland is immoral and is behavior that will destroy peace in the Straits of Taiwan," Wang said.

"The people of Taiwan are our brothers and sisters," he said. "We are not willing to meet at the battleground."

On Tuesday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said the Bush administration would deploy sufficient force in the Asia-Pacific area to lower tensions between China and Taiwan.

"We have good competent forces there," Armitage said as he also offered assurances that the Bush administration would provide Taiwan with "sufficient defense articles for her self-defense."

Armitage told reporters that "we have full faith that the question of Taiwan will be resolved peacefully."

When Chen ran for president in Taiwan in 2000, he was the candidate Beijing disliked most because his opposition party had called for independence for Taiwan. Then-Premier Zhu Rongji and state-run media warned Taiwan voters that a Chen victory could lead to war.

"The people of Taiwan are standing at a very critical historical juncture, so let me give advice to all the people of Taiwan: Do not act just on impulse," Zhu said during a news conference. "Otherwise you will regret it very much and it will be too late to repent."

Last month, Beijing condemned Taiwan's leaders for their push for independence but stopped short of threatening war.

"The separatist activities by Taiwan independence elements directly endangers the basic interests of Taiwan compatriots, and it is a disaster for Taiwan," an unidentified spokesman from the Taiwan Affairs office was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "Activities like this cannot be tolerated by the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation."

BEIJING - China has threatened to attack Taiwan if the island moves to become formally independent from the mainland.

"Taiwan independence means war," Wang Zaixi, a top Chinese official who deals with Tiawan, was quoted as saying in Wednesday's China Daily.

But at another point, he seemed more cautious, saying that open moves toward independence means "the use of force may become unavoidable."

The warning in the English-language state-run paper was published as Taiwan prepares for an election in March. President Chen Shui-bian has proposed a new constitution, and a law that would let Taiwanese vote on independence.

Wang denounced those ideas as "immoral " and "extremely dangerous behaviors" to the official Xinhua News Agency.

Taiwan split from China in 1949, but the mainland maintains the "one China" policy, which means Taiwan belongs to China and must accept reunification.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said Tuesday that the United States would provide Taiwan with the hardware to defend itself, but he expected a peaceful resolution.

China has repeatedly threatened to use force against Taiwan.

China is all talk, they have been threatening Taiwan for decades. They (Taiwan) are our ally and China will not attack them for that reason. We have been helping Taiwan economically and militarily since the Nixon Administration. Unless the US has worked out some sort of under the table deal with China.

Double-speak might sound different to someone not used to Asia. There are scores of taiwanese managers running companies in mainland China and the amount of money the taiwanese have invested there is huge. The actual message has more to do with lobbying for pro-mainland candidates than any real war threat.

Well considering China has the biggest army in the world i'm pretty sure the Tawianese are checking pants for skid marks at the moment. Although I doubt the war would happen but hey if you told me a couple years ago there would be a war in Afghanistan I'd have said "Oh weres that?...Oh there it is...all the way over there".

i don't think the US wanna take any side in this one...i think the US just wants things to cool down here..and for a simple reason; theyve got pretty good relations with taiwan, but they also want to improve relations with china for a number of reasons...first, they are a pretty flexible player in the war on terror; they can go either way. second, remember that china borders on NK, and relations with NK and china arent what they used to be 50 years ago... i wouldnt be wondered if actually china would solve the whole 'NK-problem' for us one way or another..at least they would be definately neutral, or even on the US/SK side would there be another korean war...

Honestly, considering that China already considers Taiwan a member state the Taiwanese don't really have a choice. It's kinda similar to Chechnya if you will. Why risk all that bull****, over assimilation cause there really isn't a huge governmental difference between the two places is there? Taiwan is screwed if they don't assimilate. And about the U.S, does anybody here realize how busy they are right now. As I they want to stretch their forces out anymore than they already are by getting involved with a Chinese Taiwanese conflict.

HELLO EARTH TO EVERYONE THE US IS TOO FREAKING BUSY RIGHT NOW.

The only thing China ca threaten Taiwan with are chinese surface-surface missiles. Taiwan is an island and it's unlikley that chinese brown water navy could get anything more than first wave and due to their limited amphibius capabilities it wouldn't be much. Chinese airforce isn't much better, it lacks strength for oversea offensive. This will change afcourse as China is building blue water navy (it will take them 15-20 years) and is buying new SU fighters (SU-33 if i'm not mistaken, altough it will take them several years to train their pilots effectivly).

But as long as there is US navy in Taiwan strait it's only talking the talk.

But what better time would there be to catch a strung-out United States that is over-committed around the world? There's only so far the rubber band will stretch, yeah? Short of bringing back the draft, there isn't too much spare manpower from the War on Terror, and maintaing heightened "Homeland Security" (Let's not forget the supposed War on Drugs, too) to go and defend a third front over there. (Let's also not forget the Syrian/Iranian whup-ass session that's brewing back in the middle east) It is a prime opportunity, one the Pentagon must surely be painfully aware of.

Having said that,Nukes are a pretty good bargaining chip to bluff with, I must admit.

well that, and what if idaho bought many advanced warships from a foreign super power to protect themselves like taiwan just did from the US. i was never even aware of the situation till a year ago and couldnt figure out why taiwan was buying military navy vessels from the US then they stated china was involved

just like russia trying to keep a hold of its old school conquered territories, someday it may lead to a bloody fight of independance.
