March 26, 2005 - After several days of promised arrivals and cancellations, F-22 006 from Edwards, along with an F-15 and F-16 chase, spent some time in the Mojave traffic pattern doing cross-wind testing. The F-15 flew high cover, while the F-16 accompanied the Raptor to short final, flying down Taxiway Alpha.

According to the stats, the Raptor can carry 4 external tanks, added to the 22,000 something pounds of internal fuel, supercruise, that must be a very long ferry range without inflight refueling.

Can the external tanks be refueled during flight?

And I am sure they won't be used during steath missions, hehe.

Hmm, Must be a really long range test...

The F/A-22 has alot of fuel stored in the Wings and the Fuel Tanks (unless coated in RAM and made with continuous curvature) would puff up the Radar cross-section. Anyway...

Sounds cool, hope it gets approved, the F-15C is just too old to deal with all the new Next-Gen Fighters.

Hence the term "ferry range."

will the drop tanks add radar signature? if so, doesn't that defeat the purpose of stealth?

yes.

Thats the reason why they wouldnt be used on strike or SEAD sorties, only for ferrying the planes to different locations or long CAP missions.

they could be used on combat missions if the pylon could be jetisoned along with the tank. expensive, but do-able.
