WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two U.S. special forces soldiers were killed and another wounded Saturday when their four vehicle patrol was attacked in southern Afghanistan, U.S. military officials said.

The soldiers were ambushed in the vicinity of Geresk, an area known to be friendly to the Taliban, the officials said.

The convoy came under fire from unknown assailants using small arms, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

It happened around 4 p.m. local time.

I just think everyone should know that the job in Afghanistan is not over and we should not forget about our boys there while the war in Iraq is going on...

I've heard several people within the US military say that the Op in Afghanistan can go on unimpeded even with the deployment in Iraq.

The same folks say that the US could front a successful campaign against North Korea at the same time as a war in Iraq, they would simply need about a week or two.

I've seen a report that said one of the KIA was SF and the other was from the USAF. (Possibly a CCT, though this was not confirmed)

Also, the IDs of those killed in the Pave Hawk crash were also released. Four crew and 2 PJs.

The US only has about 7,000 in Afghanistan. They could certainly maintain that level indefinitely.
Their role is to "advise" the Northern Alliance troops... much the same way they advised South Vietnamese troops in Vietnam. In Afghanistan however there is no North Vietnamese army... it is just vietcong territory and ideal ambush country in a place where the locals don't like foreigners (understandibly considering their history) and have plenty of experience and plenty of RPGs.

(And have been trained by factions including the Russians, the British and the Americans, and the Paletinians, and by the Pakistanis.)

I have a MSN Community site that I have been working on so that EVERYONE can see who these men and women are that have died. I collect the information from the Defense Link site then search the names in news sites to get information about them and a picture. I felt that was needed so that we all can take a minute to think about what we've lost and appreciate our country just a little more. I also put some of the photos onto the site from here and other sites, I linked the photo albums back to this site. Which I'd just like to say you guys were the best source for photos and you've done an outstanding job on this site! Well my site is listed on my homepage on the memberlist, I didn't want to post it here not wanting to step on any toes (and hope I haven't already done so). Look forward to talking to you all, and thanks again.
