Salem, Ore. - A picture of a Marine holding an assault rifle has sparked a wave of controversy at a Salem high school.

The problem began when the Marine's sister brought the picture to McKay High School to post on a classroom bulletin board.

The assignment was to show McKay graduates at work.

If that is the photo I can see the principles point. It doesent show the Marines in a good lite.

That said however, if it was her brother in his ceromonial stuff, or a photo of him gallantly manning a guard post or dug out yeah sure let her show it.

I used this pic of my uncle for a similar project at school, nobody freaked out and it was just after they had the school shooting in Oregon.

It's about the soldier, not the gun, which happens to be one of the tools of their job.

This stuff just strengthens my fear for where the country is going.

Too free? Come to California, kid. Please lead me to the toilet where my freedoms and rights are being flushed down daily, so I may clog it up and keep em' for a bit longer.

Plus the whole "too many of them" and "they should be silenced" thing kinda just slightly SOMEHOW sounds just a bit like the Holocaust.

Watch yer **** kid.

However, the principal of the school, Cynthia Richardson, would not allow the picture to go up because of the school's zero tolerance policy on weapons.

"What message am I sending to my students if I post that picture?" she asked.

 Is the pcture a deadly weapon? DOes this mean that in history class kids will not be allowed to see any photos from the Civil War, World War One, World War Two?

This is a frigging joke. :|

Well, they banned Halloween and Christmas parties in my school starting in the 4th grade. So, even Satan and Jesus aren't welcome in schools, apparently.

I might have to think about doing something other than teaching school... :( I might not fit in.

I wonder if any pictures of police were put up, what about park rangers, or (stretching it a little) a firefighter?

The all have weapons?

Or a farmer with a pitchfork!! RUN

Give me a break woman. Let's think outside your little box and let the kids into the real world. They are in high school and will be out there soon enough.

So if someone has a problem with something. They shouldn't speak out and try to fix it? If they actually have morals or believe in a religion. They should just shut up? Or else they are 'silenced'. WOW :cantbeli: I can't believe you said that.

America makes me think more and more in the country described in "Starship troopers".

It's not completely a critic, because there are good things in the Paul Verhoen's movie social description. But in the USA, the people leading this still-crypting social transformation are the very wrong people for that.

It always strikes me as odd the double standards of these people, they will allow the children to play war games on their computer watch films about the war, yet complain about a poster, it's funny old world.

Another thing people must take into consideration is that many of these parents grew up in the Vietnam War era and are probably still very much anti-establishment at heart.

So they're real winners then?

At least I will not have to look back and realize that Woodstock was the best experience I had in my life...

NO! Children should never be exposed to the realities of this world. We should hide everything that is real and truthful about life from them. So when they are finished with school they will be prepared to become well adjusted and productive adults!!!!!!!
We don't want our children to know what is really happening around them. If they need to know anything, just buy them the appropriate video game. But NEVER let them see the world as it really is!!!!!!!!!!

NOT!!!!!!!!!!

that really is quite astonishing. there is a degree of logic there... and suddenly it's compeltely blown out of proportion.

zero tolerance on weapons.. yeah ok that's not bad, no kid should be carrying at school... but then suddenly an image of a gun is bad?! very very strange.

A school district in Oregon banned wearing holloween customs to school becuase they didn't want to offend whitchs. Funny thing is that the wicken/whitch people interviewed in the area thouaght the customs where cute and whern't offended.

ya to free to people who have to many problems with the world or its against their morales or religion. their just to many of them and they should be silenced. In other words, if people don't agree with you they should be silenced. Saddam did a pretty good job at that and it seems that someone thought that it was wrong.

"We are the Nation of the offended"

Pics like that of Marines and soldiers have been taken since photos have existed. It's only now in the PC world in which we live that it's a problem.

The people who started the zero tolerance policies are the same ones that don't understand that putting a picture like this up at school is not going to cause violence; ignoring your kids at home while you work on zero tolerance policies will!

The picture isn't a problem,it's the kids who are carrying weapons that are!

Guns are designed for one purpose and one purpose only and that's to KILL

Unless you'r prepared to KILL then you shouldn't own equpment designed to Kill another human being!!

If you want to carry and use a gun, join the Armed Forces!!

Yeah yeah yeah....................the right to bear arms and all that.....that's fine if you're fighting an enemy etc,but if it's a power thing then, join up and see the effects of firearms in the wrong hands can do

If anything those kids could use a good role model.

And why shouldnt they use a picture with a gun in it? No need to sugar-coat our heroes right?
