International lawyers and anti-war campaigners have reacted with astonishment after the influential Pentagon hawk Richard Perle said that the invasion of Iraq had been illegal.

In a startling break with the official White House and Downing Street lines, Mr Perle said in London on Wednesday: "I think in this case international law stood in the way of doing the right thing."

Mr Perle, a member of the defence policy board, which advises US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, said that "international law . . . would have required us to leave Saddam Hussein alone", and this would have been morally unacceptable.

French intransigence, he added, meant there had been "no practical mechanism consistent with the rules of the UN for dealing with Saddam".

He should just shut the hell up and fade into the shadows instead of grandstanding and reminding people that he has a vested interest in Iraq. No matter what they say the findings were of the GAO.

What's the saying?

"Deny all the accusations, make false allegations and blame it on somebody else" is it ?

It's time this "I didn't do it, it's his fault" mentality changes...

Basically niether group Belived what the Iraqi's were saying But post 1991 the WMDs were more of a bluff.Theres bits of stuff being found here and there proving breach of UN regs but no WMDS and certainly no weapons ready to go

yes but you have huge violations of international law by the French in their illegal trade with Iraq.

the Coalition did the right thing and if international law can't adjust to that then the law is definitly an ass

back to the league of nations...
Those institutions will fail in they'r purpose if they have no power. To get power has to obey them, but many wont because they havent got the power.

international "law" again
