They work pretty well against IED'S!!!!! Better then the soft skin hummers we used last time I was in Iraq.

I've seen the Humvees up close with the huge armored turrets that you have to use a hand crank to swivel around. Are any of them deployed in Iraq?

They look great, but it seems like it cant be used for light recon anymore, all that armor must slow it down right?

Yes, but the up-armored ones are intended for patrolling duty and "planned" engagements... nay? For "light recon" duty the troops can still use the thin-skinned ones... (until that lightweight polymer spray-on armor is "fielded").

And easier to spot.

The new armor has the unfortunate consequence of making it humvee harder to control at high speeds, easier to roll, go into a canal, etc. Everything is a tradeoff in warfare I suppose.

You might want to rethink that. The IEDs aint always that easy to spot no matter how huge they are.

Those who underestimate the enemy seldom get a chance to re-consider.

The insurgents dont exactly have weapons manufacturing plants, I bet their supply of explosives is too limited to waste lots on one hard target IMO.

Wherever theyre getting their goods, theyll run out quick if they need to use twice the bomb per IED.

everytime we rolled outside the wire in iraq (mosul,Bagdad) we had to travel in not less then 4 uparmors everytime!!!! They work aweome. But you could not put the windows down because if you got hit with a IED it could tear you up pretty good. Got hot inside during hot days!!!! The armor around the gunner is very good protect him better!!! soft kin humvee dont have that armor. We had vehicle hit with IEDs and they protect us inside pertty good.

Would be nice, if it would be like that.

Lat us estimate that they have 50 metric tons of TNT left. And they use, let us say,... 2 metric tons of TNT every day. That give them about,...a 1000 days of... You see; It is near to impossible to guess how much they have left. It is also near to impossible to guess how many tons entering the country each day. You see, to the left you have Syria and to the right you have Iran, and the borders are wide open.

From what ive seen reported there are about 30 IEDs atempted per day.

So 30 large IED with 100lbs of explosives each equals 3000lb are close to 1200kg a day in explosives smaller IEDs would have only used around a tenth that amount.

The matrials requiment for the larger IEDs is clearly allot harder to acheave and also keep hidden but at same time Iraq was turned into one big ammo by saddam with estimates rangeing from 650.000ton to 2.000.000tons.

This means while you do everything you can to elimanate that mountain of ordanace and stop it from falling into the wrong hands and you uparmor you vehicles to increase you odds of surviveing a IED attack al this doesnt change fact that only real means of stopping the attacks is to elimanate the people who are building placeing and detonateing them.
