dude common that was kinda tasteless... the "mexican" cleaning your pool is either

A) A U.S. Citizen
B) an illegal immigrant who had enough mind to leave mexico and come to the United States.

This isn't about fans going ballistic on each other. it's about Mexicans taunting Americans ona subject they obviously don't give a flying **** about. 3,000 people died that day. Those who chanted "Osama, Osama" should say it to the victims' families. I'd love to be there. And I'd love to kick their ****ing asses.

Dont forget that aside from cleaning our pools, they need to mow the lawns and wash our dishes for $1 an hour. That is pretty much what many, if not most, of them amount to in their lives. I have a stong feeling that they are chanting Osama mostly out of sheer jealously of our CIVILIZED way of life, something that they have to look over the border and see every day.

the "mexicans" cleaning your pools, picking your grapes, and mowing your lawns are in fact in the U.S. for a reason.... belittling them is in no way parallel to making fun of mexican nationals in mexico city.

There are any amount of tasteless football songs and chants. "Who's that dying on the runway" immediately springs to mind.

Who's that dying on the runway?
Who's that dying in the snow?
It's Matt Busby and his boys
making such a f ucking noise
coz they can't get their aeroplane to go!

I don't think that one has been sung for a few years now, but it was once. And if you want worse, you should look up some of the sectarian songs.

As Moug. hinted at, look up the Heysel disaster (pretty topical at the moment since LFC and Juve are playing each other in the Cl soon).

Hey guys lets please not forget the hundreds of Mexican Americans fighting and dying bravely in Iraq for thier country = The United States.

They arnt fighting for Mexico........they arnt dying for Mexico...........they arnt wearing Mexican flags...........its all American.

When you guys stoop to the level of idiocy that was displayed by certain Mexican soccer fans (and lets remmember that soccer fans arnt generally the most well behaved demographic of any society) and you insult poor hard working legal Mexican Americans who do clean your pools..........it really is just as insulting to them as the Osama chant is to you.

Really you guys insult many of the very young men fighting for you in Iraq right now...........You dont even have to agree with why they are there (I dont).........but you really should support the troops who are fighitng within the law, within moral bounds, etc............They deserve alot more than to be called our "pool boys"...........I wonder how many of thier fathers cleaned pools and did other low wage labor so that thier son/daughter could grow up a proud American willing to sign up and risk all in defense of nation.............I wonder how many of the 18-21 year olds were pool boys themselves before they signed up..........

Before you guys start poking fun at immigrant labor I suggest you dig up your own roots and find out what your great grandfathers and mothers had to go through when they came to America.....b/c I'd bet the farm that alot of them had similar, if not worse, experiences then todays Mexican immigrants.........I'd bet they worked for less, in ****ier conditions, and for people who laughed at them and belittled them just as you are in the position to do now........and not only that but your immigrant kin were probably viewed at one time as enemies of the nation without "proper moral values" ......which was all just code and cover for biggoted hatred and racism........

you really ought to be ashamed of yourselves.........Just about every immigrant group was "enemy number one" at one time or another in American history. Irish, german, chinese, italian, japanses, even a large chunk of the English during the Revolution etc........all were at times feared, hated, and looked down upon by other so called Americans.............Just remmember that next time you laugh at the Mexican cleaning your pool........

I am Mexican American, and in no way do I condone what the fans were chanting at the stadium. I do find it very funny how a stupid game brings out the idiots and bigots on this board. I seem to remember that there have been plenty of football, and basketball games at college towns where riots broke out afterwards. Do these people represent all Americans?

04-05-2005, 01:00 AM
GAFES, I am an American by the way..........just living in NZ.........and I must say that I for one think that Mexicans are one of the best groups of people I know. (positive stereotype hehe).

I live in an area with a high Mexican immigrant population and I am blown away by how friendly they are.......even though my area of the states is full of racists and biggots who treat them like ****.....they still just shrug it off and smile.

(example: whites have attacked two gas stations in my town: One was owned by a Mexican and the other by an Indian who they just assumed was a Muslum because of his skin color). On the Indians they spray painted "Revenge for 911" and on the Mexicans "No More Illegals" so its obvious what thier motives were............The sad thing is that the Mexican guy was an upstanding citizen who donatd to local charity and the Indian guy was a long time small buisness owner who never did anything to hurt anyone...........

I tell you this: I have never met a stranger so freindly to me as a Mexican.

One night my car broke down in a rural area.........I had no cell phone on me........I walked to a random house........nocked on door at 11:30.........a Mexican opened it.......invited me in for beers and pizza........He was throwing a B-day party for his friend who had just legally arrived in the states on his B-day no less. They also let me try every single one of the special Mexican dishes each of the guests had brought to welcome the brother. It was awesome. He spoke no english at all and yet was super freindly to me........Then when I let them know I spoke Spanish it got even better. Smiles all around.......These guys had no idea who I was. I just showed up at thier door at 11:30 at night in the middle of nowhere. They never even gave me a suspicious look........just invited me in for the party like I was thier long lost best friend. Then they helped me fix my car. They got out on a cold night after giving me free beer and food at THIER party and were hapy to get greasy and muddly to help fix my car! When I left the last thing they said to me was "come back any time amigo". Its just a part of thier culture I guess because I have had other similar experiences of friendliness too numerous to mention...........(more positive stereotypes)

GAFES, Im gonna tell you the same thing I said before. Just because a bunch of morons on this board are biggots and racists dont become one yourself and start hating Americans...........There are more spanish speaking Americans then there are people in all of Spain so if you hate Americans your just hating a good portion of your own people----> (there are also a huge number of Mexican Americans as well). There are also alot of whites who applaud Mexican immigration and enjoy the mix of culture that it brings. I love Mexican food, mexican music, mexican attitude etc.......I speak spanish and have several Mexican friends....Every time I see another "Mercado Central" open up it brings a smile to my face.

Mexicans dont push thier **** on anybody.........they are generally hard working and moraly upstanding citizens.............Sure you can go to hell holes like inner city LA (I used to live in a bad part of Santa Monica back during the angel dust craziness) and find the worst examples if thats your agenda (**** you can find the worst of every group in LA)........but you can also go to small town America and find many of the best......if thats also your agenda......... It has alot to do with how you want to look at things..........not how things really are........Maybe I want to see Mexicans in a good light........but I cant honeslty thing why. I have no vested interest in trying to support Mexicans......The only way I can explain it is that over time my prejudices and negative stereotypes about Mexicans were broken down just by interacting with them........after all most prejudice and hatred is based only on ignorance......and most of it goes out the window ounce you actually let yourself interact with whatever group you hate .

Ratamacue

I agree entirely with obd, as much as he usually pisses me off. :P But let's really think about this. I don't think it's unreasonable for Americans to be majorly pissed off after an occurance like at this soccer game. It's not like the crowd was chanting "you suck!" or something simple like that. They were chanting the name of the man who planned the hijacking of four airliners, an attack on the Pentagon, the destruction of the Twin Towers, and the deaths of 3,000 people. For many people, this frustration and anger is going to be released in the form of generalizations and hatred. I'll admit that I chuckled at what BlackRain said because it was pretty funny. But that doesn't mean that I feel that way at all about Mexicans. Quite the contrary really.

Zorro C9

Most chants don't last outside the stadium- this one reached out and touched everyone. Haha.

dang, finally i got some backup here. and no im not some latin/hispanic/mexican activist... and neither do i consider myself mexican-american. my parents, parents from mexico? sure. but i consider myself just american cuz thats all what i am, born and raised that way too. the pool cleaners, lawn mowers, and grape pickers these clowns speak of are some of my family members. All citizens of the united states and some are enlisted personnel AD and reserve and i will be AD Army come july 12th <-- DEP
And im not angry at the racial stereotypes you guys have been throwing around. slightly irritated? yup. its just that you guys made an effort to belittle an entire group of people (that are here IN THE UNITED STATES; for all you know are U.S. citizens or naturalized immigrants) based upon what a bunch of mexican nationals on the other side of the border chanted.

In Mexico, as in most of the world (except the United States of course), soccer is a BIG deal, in fact it is the KING of sports. Mexican major league soccer players are paid a lot higher than their U.S. counterparts. When the national team plays, everyone supports the team, including most Mexicans living abroad. Mexico vs. the U.S. is considered the most classic game of all given the historical fact that no other country in the world has invaded Mexico as many times and spilled Mexican blood on Mexican soil as the U.S. Most Mexicans have never forgotten that the U.S. stole half of Mexico's territory in the middle of the nineteenth century (that's right, Mexico did not willingly give away half its territory, 50,000 Mexicans died defending Mexico in that tragic war). You can say, that the U.S. invasion of Mexico (1846-1848) was Mexico's 9-11, only with much more devastating consequences. So I think, that Mexican soccer fans chanting Osama, Osama at a soccer game against the U.S. is a pretty harmless get back at the U.S. and were just having fun. Anyway, I saw the game, it was good, Mexico played better and just kicked butt. Good for Mexico.
As for GAFES, he should really just blow off those racist biggots that often invade this forum. As a Mexican born in the U.S., I have met many of them face to face, and when you do they are all just a bunch of cowards. I once made one cry outside of a supermarket after he put down a beggar with racial slurs. After I confronted him, he was just one big pussy.
GAFES, you are one of the best contributors to this site, your pictures and information help educate a lot of morons whose only idea of the world beyond their southern border comes from Holiwood.
Saludos

Though I really do not approve with the illegal immigration issue, its not only the mexicans that are guilty but also american business's looking for the quick buck afforded by cheap labor. F all those mexican bastards at that game, but soccer is really the only thing they have to be proud of since Benito Juarez. I dont blame the honest hard working people just looking for a better way of life that come here. But if you cant Osama to me be prepeared for the boot heading towards Uranus!

No offence my latino brother but that is the biggest bull**** I always here Mexicans spule! The Mexican American War was fought simply over Texas and the abuses of General Santa Anna toward Texanos(spelling?)and the battle of the fort (Alamo) started it! American soldiers responded by fighting back. The result was the Battle of San Jacinto, in which a force of several hundred Americans defeated a much larger Mexican force. Half of the Mexican soldiers were killed, and most of the rest were taken prisoner.

Yeah, it's a bit tasteless but there are other similar chants.

I know of couple of English ones

"You'll never take the Falklands" Whenever we play Argentina

"Two world wars and one world cup, doo dah doo dah!" Against Germany

"He beats his wife, he beats his wife, he beats his-
Gazza beats his wife...." Directed at Paul Gascoigne who... beat up his wife

"Timmy Howard

"Vieira ooooh!

One i forgot was "No surrender" which was sung at any game, but particularly if England played Ireland.

"With St George in my heart keep me singing,
with St George in my heart I pray.
With a bullet in my gun,
i'll be shooting one by one,
all those bastards in the IRA."

It has become very much a hooligan song and is very rarely heard in anything other than the lower leagues.

Odb brought up some good points and I know there is plenty of good Mexican here in this country. But don’t come up with the excuse that because soccer is such a big sport that you condone the chants or overlook how those chants will impact some of the people here. Those losers new what they were chanting and used it to demoralize a team that was trying to win. They are the lowest form of life and far outweigh any from of bigotry found on this forum.

That said this topic should have been locked from the start because of its sensitive nature.

Wrong. Soccer is popular in the US, more college and high school students play soccer than american football. The difference is that the pro leagues don't get the media coverage of the NFL, MLB or NBA. There's so many pro sports leagues in the US, all can't be #1.

Here's some facts about soccer in the US:

In 1998-99, 983 NCAA [National Collegiate Athletic Association] schools had men's basketball programs, making it by far the most popular sport. Below are the top five most-offered college men's and women's sports. Note that football is in eighth place for men, sponsored by 607 NCAA institutions. Source: NCAA.

MEN'S WOMEN'S

Basketball 983 Basketball 1004
Baseball 847 Volleyball 963
Cross-Country 829 Cross-Country 891
Tennis 767 Tennis 877
Soccer 718 Softball 832

http://www.uta.fi/FAST/US7/REF/top-98.html#college

Not that american football, at #8, is not there and yet is arguably more popular than soccer. Hockey is also absent from the list, yet the NHL receives better coverage than pro soccer.

http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/a071103.htm

Personally, I think the more the merrier. I remember when I was in England, I was so thankful for rugby because other than that and soccer, there was only tennis and polo on TV. And in France, hockey is virtually unknown.

Personally again, I don't understand. In my book, soccer has nothing on american football, rugby or hockey. But that's just my opinion. p-)

The result was an American-controlled Texas, for the most part. Despite the troubles, Americans continued to move there. Tensions remained high, but fighting was at a minimum for several years. No, I honestly think the "whining" comes as a reaction to the disgusting attitude of the mexican supporters (note that I insist on "supporters", in this case I don't wish to generalize), which I think is inexcusable.

To insinuate that US supporters pretend to be offended by it to mask their deception of losing a game of soccer disregards the impact of 9/11 on the US and the sensitive nature of the subject. I think that US supporters would have been pissed (and rightly so) by this behavior even if they had beat Mexico 3-none.

Young boys may play it but usually move on to [American] football by their teen years and through highschool. By the way, the Mexican War as it is called in the U.S., or the U.S. Invasion as it is called in Mexico, was not a "fair" war, it was a war of territorial conquest by a stronger neighbor against a peaceful weaker one and it did cost 50,000 mexican lives. Abe Lincoln himself (not president at the time) was one of its critics. Don't forget history is always writen by the victors. It's not always true. But that is for another discussion. Because that's a false statement. Every year it becomes more and more popular. It's also highly dependant on where you live. Where I used to live on Long Island, few people really gave a **** about American Football. Everything was all about soccer and lacrosse. Soccer is also pretty big here in Colorado. Well, the horse is pretty much dead on the argument of the pro's and con's of Hispanics and immigration as well as the "who has a better soccer team" debate...but I will say that I speak decent Spanish and watch a lot of various Spanish speaking channels on TV, from what I have seen Mexico totally supports the US in the war on terror. I have seen only small, isolated incidents of criticism toward the US on this issue, and it's usually from distraught parents who have lost a loved one in the war.

This could be due to a variety of reasons but the main one (IMHO) is that Mexicans realize that many of their comrades and family members are in the US...and many of those serve in the US armed forces as well. I have seen more support from them for our troops than I have from many Americans.

On another note, an observation that I usually make to people on the immigration issue is this: most Mexicans that immigrate to the US illegally are at the end of their economic rope. They are making a last ditch, all out effort at a better life. Usually these are the Mexicans that Americans come in contact with in the US. Unfortunately this leads to the generalization that all of Mexico is one big suffering nation. This is not always the case, there are many economically prosperous and wealthy Mexicans still in Mexico. Since they are doing well financially, they have no need to emigrate to the US. So, if the tables were turned and Americans were forced to flee their own country, what view would others give us if they only met the stereotypical trailer-trash American? They obviously wouldn't see the millions of others that are still well-off and remained in their country.

Now, I am not saying that Mexicans in the US are the equivalent of trailer-trash, or that all poorer Americans (or anyone living in a trailer) is trash. But just like the root of all negative stereotypes, it only takes a few bad examples.

In all seriousness though, Mexico would be much worse off without the US next door, as would Canada, 90% of the population lives on the border. Since this happened awhile ago I have calmed down but it was still a dispicable move. There are definite deep seeded resentments towards us on the southern border, mexican on american violent crime is common. During the Olympics last year Greek citizens burned the american flag after one of their runners was disqualified for using a banned substance, they actually thought it was an american conspiracy. It comes down to big d-ck syndrome, we let ours swang and people start acting like children, and children get spanked.

Hunting is hardly a sport anymore, the advantage is so much for the hunter now the animal hardly has a chance. I remeber overhearing some hunters looking over all the new gear at a sporting goods store, its seems it has become more of who can buy the coolest kit than the actual hunting itself. The Mexican/Mexican American people I know are the hardest working most genuine people I know, when I have visited Mexico the people truly make you feel right at home. I have no problem with Mexicans wanting to come here and make a better life but it must be regulated, and any regulations will/do look bad to the Mexican people. You cant deny that what those people did during the world cup match was the worst kind of sucker punch, and I remember seeing it on TV it wasnt just some of them it was all of them. Finally I do think it was wrong to take Mexicos land from them, its been a long time since I studied that in history but if it was Mexicos then it should be theirs today, the white man has done enough land grabbing . What I would like to see more is the Mexicans making a better country for themselves and if they need help the rest of the world would surley help. It just seems like Mexicos goverment isnt very proactive in any sense.

Seriously all of you need to take a chill pill...this match was way more important for the mexicans...due to pride. In the previous six matches the US record against mexico is 4-1-1 thats 4 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw...One of the US wins includes the last World Cup finals where the US put the mexicans out of the competetion.

Both teams are garunteed to qualify as long as they play to current levels, so this game was for bragging rights only.

It's not just regional eccentricities. As I said, here in Colorado, soccer is fairly popular and lacrosse is growing as well. And lacrosse is big pretty much all down the east coast, Maryland in particular. Last I remember, they're both growing in California as well. That's not to say that football and all those more "American" sports are dying out, it's just that to say that soccer is unimportant and unpopular in the US is completely false.

As for Long Island, yeah, my family moved away about two years ago. But I like it there, even if things can be a bit hectic and stressful.

Soccer is very popular in alot of parts of Texas, and yes very much so in the border area. Although Football is a religon here though.

Without a doubt this thread has been beat to death, but Just thought I would throw in my .2cents. My family owns land on the Texas-Mexico border and we either stumble on illegals or they stumble on us. They are never offensive or hostile. We give them food and water a cerveza if we have extra, then call the border patrol, cya next week amigos! They are just people like you and me trying to find a better life. You can drive around Austin at any hour and seem homeless vagrants on every street corner, but not a single damn one of them is Hispanic. WHY? Because they are willing to take any job and then some more. They work their ass's off all week, then on friday put on ostrich cowboy boots, startched wranglers, and crank up the tejano! If you have never been to a quinceanera or Mexican wedding your missing out! So I went OT sorry

Actually, Callous, it shows that your knowledge of the US-Mexico war is very poor. Most serious historians will admit that the US claim that the Texas-Mexico border started at the Río Grande was bogus. The Mexican claim that the border started at the Río Nueces was more closer to the truth. Therefore, the war started when US troops invaded Mexican territory. Besides, the US was just looking for an excuse to start the war at any cost. If you read a serious book on the subject (Duel of Eagles by Jeff Long) it will talk about the United States' desire to expand all the way to the Pacific coast. Have you ever heard of "Manifest Destiny"?

It's worthless to discuss if a sport is 'for real men'. The europeans, asians , africans and latin americans love football. (Me included) Why bother when the u.s. americans don't? The other part of the discussion has nothing to do with football, but with immigration.

So flaming is useless.

And 'Osama' chants in a football stadium. Why bother, when most americans don't bother the game and mexicans either. Why not throw back:

(singing: "clean my pool till 6 pm... doo dye doo dye") That would be football like.

It's just a game... There's no political "discussion" in a stadium.

OK didn't say i would do it. Just wanted to say don't care to much about hate chanting in a football game.

I'm totally against racist chanting against players. But if mexican ultras (or whoever this was) bring osama to the game, americans could have reacted in some other harsh way. That's how it works here. I don't want anybody to turn racist!!!

Edit:  When england plays us they normally bring the war into the game. "One world cup and two world wars doo dye doo dye" I like that. It's fun. (we have three world cups). From a fan side it's not a gentlemens sport.

In response to Francisco stating we need to get better players, well the US was prior to the last match 6 0 1 against Mexico. The US made it to the final 8 of the last WC and knocked off Mexico 2 nil to do it. Mexico scoring in the last match was its first points off of the US in 4 matches. I'm not suprise by the US losing in Mexico City, at 7k ft above sea level, in a stadium that seats and sells out over 100k, and in one of the smoogiest cities in the world, its probably one of the toughest venues for a visiting team to win at in the world. As offensive as the chanting was it seemed to be more out of desperation from some mexican fans as to the fact that the only sport in which they had the USAs number is starting to slip away from them. Just wait til the next match between the 2 countries takes place, which is in the US in a part of the country with a small latino population (Columbus Ohio) a place Mexico has never won at and you will see for yourself who's the new dominate of the 2 countries.

That's very true, good post! In the England - Northern Ireland game last week there were a bunch of England fans singing the tune to Dambusters. This was, presumably, because the ref. was from Germany.

More silly than racist, but it still invokes the war and it would be easy for people who don't understand the nature of most football fans to get the wrong idea. Most of the fans do this type of thing as a fun wind-up, not because they hate anyone.

You're right. There's a thin line between racism and "tasteless" football fun on the stands. But it's hard to explain to americans. The football fan culture is MUCH different then the family-orientated attendance at american sports. Even with 13 i went to away games with my classmates. The group you travel with is normally a bunch of whacko antisocial human beings. But it's fun :)

90% on the border? Not true.

And for all the people on this forum, I'm a Mexican. Born in Mexican. I have a US passport now. I served in the USMC for seven years. Am I cleaning your goddamn pools? For those on this board that have common sense and understanding, thank you. For those that don't, I pity you.
