my name is SD and I´m brand new here.

I´ve served for 7 years in the Danish infantry and cavalry (leopard 1).
In 2004 - 2005 I served in Iraq near Basrah as recconesense section commander.

There it became very clear to me, that we all ( Brittish, Americans, Danes) do things our own way. this made me nervous, because the situation, or the combat dictates that there is only one " best way" of doing things, and allthough variety is normal - fundimental diference is a sign of someone being wrong.

It is clear that the armies can learn from eachother, but generals and combat scools have a way of always wanting to invent the deep plate themselves. I hope I can gain some of the knowledge i lack through this forum.

Let me start off with a few random queastions:

1) when did US Army start issuing knee protection or eye protection and was it considered "nice" in stead of "need" at the army schools at the start?

2) how thourough are debriefings after missions or drills, and does these debriefings involve privates and seargents?

3) how does the army communicate lessons learned to its new privates? are veterans a part of the education or is it only drill instructors ( perhaps only with 3rd hand knowledge) who sorts things out?

I understand if some topics are sensitive to communicate on the internet and I´ll offer the adress of my unit and barracks for old fasioned correspondance to anyone interrested. write me a pm if so.

... and great forum by the way

Welcome!

1) when did US Army start issuing knee protection or eye protection and was it considered "nice" in stead of "need" at the army schools at the start?

I'm not sure when they started "Issuing it" but we had them back in the late 80's. I bought my own though. They were issued to us at our unit when we completed whatever training it took to get on a team. Our supply sargeant had them in stock.

2) how thourough are debriefings after missions or drills, and does these debriefings involve privates and seargents?

The debriefings or "after action reports" are very detailed and are given to and presented by officers and enlisted respectively!

3) how does the army communicate lessons learned to its new privates? are veterans a part of the education or is it only drill instructors ( perhaps only with 3rd hand knowledge) who sorts things out?

Depends on what training that you're referring to. To learn your MOS you are generally taught by specialists in the field in which you're training. Drill sargeants teach you the basics and get you to school on time and march you there, etc. When you get to the higher level training i.e. Airborne, Air Assault, SF you are almost always taught by veterans from that field that have been there, done that.
Hope this helps!!

Hei og velkommen! :D
Hope you enjoy the place, i've been here the last three years despite some of the ****s who sour the atmosphere. There isn't a better military forum out there IMO.
Been working with the Danes before and you guys sure know your stuff! ;)
Take care and take it easy,

Cheers,
Marcus
