These ones don't seem as ragtag as the folks in Afghanistan.
Probably because the people they're with, the Kurds, aren't as ragtag as the people in Afghanistan. The base standard of living is slightly higher...

The story paired with the shot of the SF snipers by that rock outcropping was also quite interesting. Reporter describes their patient scan for targets, the disciplined shots, and then telling their superior "We think we smoked at least three of them, sir." I've gotta wonder how the reporter could get in on this, I mean embedded with SF or something?

I found on the Web references to several court cases involving grooming standards--evidently some Sunni Muslims were suing various government agencies for the right to grow beards.
It is written: "Some of those who filed the action have more than 20 years of service and all claim to be devout followers of Islam, which mandates the wearing of beards."

Kurds are Sunni Muslims, as are most of those Iraqis who have power.
So perhaps Iraqi government leaders are either unable to grow beards, or they do not adhere to the custom since they are trying to maintain an image of being secularized. I don't know what to make of the Kurds, if they do not grow beards on purpose.
Perhaps with American military dominance in N. Iraq, it is not necessary that our sf operators grow beards, like they had to in Afghanistan, where they were operating without much support (besides air power) and had to blend in as much as possible in order to carry out their mission more effectively?

The beards signify maturity.SF's in Afghanistan grew beards not only to look like Afghans but to show they were mature and were then able to make decisions on how to fight.
