Attacks against Iraqis 'increase'

A vehicle packed with explosives rammed a police station on Saturday
Attacks on American troops in Iraq have declined in recent weeks, but strikes against Iraqis are up, officials say.
At the same time, US forces have stepped up attacks on suspected insurgents, US administrator Paul Bremer and General John Abizaid said.

"Attacks against the coalition have definitely gone down, our attacks have gone up, and attacks against civilians have increased," General Abizaid said.

Mr Bremer said attackers would not dissuade Iraqis from co-operating with the coalition.

If Saddam [Hussein] taught the Iraqis nothing else, it was how to endure the depredations of thugs

Paul Bremer,
US administrator
"They have failed to intimidate the coalition. They have now begun a pattern of trying to intimidate innocent Iraqis." he said.

"They will not succeed. If Saddam [Hussein] taught the Iraqis nothing else, it was how to endure the depredations of thugs," he said.

A bomb in the northern city Kirkuk reportedly injured three Iraqis as Mr Bremer and General Abizaid were speaking, the French AFP news agency said.

At the news conference, General Abizaid reiterated that the US did not intend to keep its forces in Iraq indefinitely.

"There is no doubt that American forces will leave Iraq... when we are no longer needed," he said.

Intimidation

At least 18 Iraqis were killed when police stations north of Baghdad were bombed at the weekend.

Six Iraqi policemen and three civilians were killed when a car packed with explosives rammed into the police station at Khan Bani Saad 50 kilometres (30 miles) north-east of Baghdad, US military sources said.

About 15 kilometres north, a second car bomb rocked the main police station at Baquba, killing seven policemen and two civilians, a US military spokesman said.

The towns lie in the so-called "Sunni triangle" area - a stronghold of supporters of Saddam Hussein and scene frequent attacks against US forces by insurgents.

I see two good things here.

1) The (resistance fighters, terrorists, Sadam loyalists etc) are seeing that Iraqis are cooperating and that the situation is imporving and they (the resistance fighters, terrorists, Sadam loyalists etc, call them what you want) need to put an end to it or else they will lose yet another posslbe haven as Afghanistan use to be.

2) Maybe the now the target more and more Muslims (Arabs remeber Turkey, they were attacked recently) the Iraqi civilians will see that the enemy sees no difference between fellow muslisms and westerners and thus compelling the Iraqis to fight against the insergents.
