42 Commando in Southern Iraq

So what does that designation mean again? Is that equivalent to Marine Force Recon for US troops? Does the commando carry special meaning?

The whole RM brigade is called "3 Commando Brigade". During WW2 were used as a raid force so got the "commando" denomination. The British Marines are nowadasys light infantry.

The only true mechanized marine force in Europe is the Spanish Marine Brigade. (M60, AAV7, Mowag Piranha, Scorpion, Hummer/TOW). :) By the way Spanish Marines are the oldest in the world.

3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines is made up of 3 major batallion strength sub-units known as Commando's - 40 (Forty), 42 (Four Two) and 45 (Four Five).

All serving members of the Brigade must be Commando qualified - training which roughly equates with Ranger School (although is more marine orientated) although sub units and individuals are occasionaly taken OpCom or OpCon.

The Brigade Recce Force (another element of 3 Cdo Bde) is more analogous in role with Force Recon.

The black and white photo is a RN flag, as it has the Union flag in the corner of it. The colour photo above it is just the flag for England, the St. George's flag, incidentally, the PAFC written on presumably stands for Plymouth Argyle Football Club, either where they're based in the Uk, or someone there supports them...
Correct it if i'm wrong...
