Bush intensifies global US troop review (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/us_military_bush)
PHOENIX, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) announced that the United States is stepping up discussions with key European and Asian allies about the overhaul of US global military deployments.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will provide more details of Washington's plans at NATO (news - web sites) ministerial meetings in early December, Bush said in a statement released by the White House.
"High-level U.S. teams will begin consultations in foreign capitals in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere following those meetings," said the president.
A senior administration official said the president was not accelerating the process of revamping deployments, just moving ahead with planned consultations with key allies on where best to position US forces.
"Beginning today, the United States will intensify our consultations with the Congress and our friends, allies, and partners overseas on our ongoing review of our overseas force posture," Bush said in the statement.
"We will ensure that we place the right capabilities in the most appropriate locations to best address the new security environment," where rogue nations, terrorism, and weapons proliferation are the biggest threats, said Bush.
Bush came to office in January 2001 with plans to overhaul US forces to make them more mobile as well as revamp where they are stationed abroad.
"We will invite the full participation of our friends and allies" in the process, said the president, who has drawn fire for launching the US-led invasion of Iraq (news - web sites) in March without explicit UN approval.
"A fully transformed and strengthened overseas force posture will underscore the commitment of the United States to effective collective action in the common cause of peace and liberty," he said.
