K4 Norrlands Dragoon Regiment 1646-2005

Norrlands Dragoon Regiment - K4 - descends from Ångermanland, Medelpad and Jämtland Regiment established 1646. after the Peace of Brömsebro. The Regiment has been stationed in several places, among others Frösön in Jämtland and Umeå in Västerbotten. Since 1980 Norrlands Dragoon Regiment has been located in Arvidsjaur in Norrbotten. But sadly the K4 closed this year :(

1931 Ådalen, a famous event in the Swedish labour-movements history. A procession of demonstrators was fired upon by soldiers from the 21.th infantry regiment in Sollefteå and several civilians were killed. K4 was then sent in to prevent further disturbances, but did not have to intervene. This tragic event is one reason why Sweden today have very strict regulations regarding how and when the Swedish Army can assist in civilian matters.

1980, 21st of May the press was invited to the new regiment in Arvidsjaur. In June the first conscripts soldiers joined up. 20th of September the King of Sweden, Karl XVI Gustav, inaugurated Norrlands Dragoon Regiments new barracks in Arvidsjaur

K4 as a special link with the French LRRPs, the 13 RDP and it would be a shame to lose that.

K4 will be disbanded :( But some part off K4 will be moved to the infantry (I19)

But K4 where one off the best in Sweden

1: yes it is because the budget cuts right. There where also allot off army schools closed and the three month Home guard education is also gone.

2: K4 are rangers or old cavalry but P4 is armoured with Strv 122 Leopard CV90 and LVKV90 :D

3: I don’t know where the money gone go. But that whole army is gone get a new organization and that cost allot off money….

This is the same that has been going on in Norway for the last few years.. We now have all of our sharp end forces concentrated in northern norway and even many of the regional mobilization units have disappeared.. Might be a more cost efficient and up to date military, but it`s sad to lose all the tradition..At least they have established some new units like coastal rangers that make up for a little of it.. :)

Yes I know mate :D time have change in Scandinavia the Russian threat are gone. we don’t need to have al those regiment and the whole .. And I am glad to see that what’s left are getting allot off new equipment but it breaks my heart to see al those regiment closed.. Some off those regiment have been here since 1646

In order to sign up for Hemvärnet you have to have earlier military experience (such as Swedish military service). For those that for some reason didn't do their service and still want to join Hemvärnet, they have to complete a three-month long course educating them about the military and how it works.

You have to do a military service to join the home guard in Sweden and the problem is that there is so few people doing military service today so we hade problem recruiting new soldiers to the home guard.
so we did a test with a 3month home guard education to learn people the military basic and get them into the Home guard

K4 as a autonomous regiment will be disbanded yes.. But the unit will be reorganized under the nearby regiment I 19 (Infantry Regiment 19) and training facilities for both swedish and foreign forces will be kept at the current place in Arvidsjaur.

Still it's sad to see these old regiments with so much history being disbanded. I for sure hope that they will keep Livgardet (Life guard regiment) which is the world's oldest unit that's still in service. It has been around since 1521.

Air Assault battalion
Reconnaissance battalion
FJS (Parachute Ranger School)
SSG

Reconnaissance battalion is the new LRRP/OP, FAC unit in the swedish army.
But if you askt me it wod hade bin beter to place this unit at K4 wen the old type of ranger units in the army is being closed down.
Becase now the unit wil not get the amount of artic traning it neds.

That`s perfect! exactly what I needed!! :) thanks man! Doubt they get the same quality winter training down south..
But then again you could just send them to our allied winter training centre in norway.-. :) We have plenty of snow and cold weather.. in fact we had a blizzard in my town yesterday so thick I couldn`t see further than about 100 meters..

They have decided to keep facilities there, at least for a transition period...

We'll see what happens. The K4-people will probably want to keep the facilites in Arvidsjaur but the cost for that is 22 million sek a year just for the buildings.. One possibility is that they will shut that down and have winter/mountain training further up north in Kiruna where there's still a militärdistriktsgrupp and facilities in service.

Fjälljägare?

The Fjälljägare (mountain troops) died in 2000 when they did close Lapplands jägarregemente I22 (Infantry Regiment 22) :( but some off it where moved to K4

There have never been any fjälljägare in the Swedish Army...
